Looking for my first truck

I am a truck newbie and looking for my first truck. I definitely want a Ford and the 150 will be just fine.

I found a 2005 F150 Screw with 48k for $18, Its got the towing package the 5.4 and it looks clean to me. It at carmax tho but doesnt appear to be a fleet vehicle so its safe to assume it was privately owned and not rented. Id like a longer bed but this will do.

It seems to have most everything I want and a decent price. I am looking to the forum for tips and advice on buying a used F-150. What to look for and any info on reliability on this model and engine is very much appreciated, Thanks!

Heres the Carmax link.

First let me say that I love my 2007 fx4
Second let me say that I do not and would not recommend our generation of trucks. They are overweight underpowered and have annoying faults that are not cheap to fix. Just too complicated for my liking. Mine is payed off and I have spend too much removing the problematic parts of our trucks. I won't sell my truck I'll drive it until it falls apart. Knowing what I do know I don't think I'd buy my truck again. I'd buy another 94-96.

Let me say this. If you have to think about a truck it might not be a good deal. All of my trucks I KNEW I was gonna love when when either I saw it or saw the price. No questions. No thinking about it. It's instinct.
I bought mine in early 09 for 19k with 30k miles on the clock and the factory tires were still good. Just knew it was for me.

I gotta agree in part. I love my truck but I bought it with problems and fixed them myself so the price was right. The 5.4 3 valve can have some serious issues if it was not properly maintained. If your set on the 04 bodystyle I would look into a 4.6 less power but more reliable. But Gwar did you really just complain about a 5.4 3 valve being underpowered and say you would buy a 94-96 with a 5.0, 5,8 or 4.9? I love the 4.9. My favorite engine ever but the reason they never break is because they don't turn enough rpm to tear themselves up! The 5.0 or 5.8 adequate power at best.

I had a 5.8 4x4 that made just enough power for the weight and handling for that truck. Anything more you could quite well end up using that truck as a coffin. I also had a 93 lightning TALK ABOUT POWER I could drive sideways for miles turning my rear tires into clouds of awesomeness. Also have the powerstrokes. Same truck bigger engine.
