Cool 99 Explorer Sport 4x4 Transmission Problems

Ok, I just bought a 1999 Explorer Sport 4x4 4.0L SOHC with 5r55e Transmission with 175,000 miles and I am having slipping problems. I'm hoping someone will have an idea of whats going on. I'll start from the beginning... I test drove the car and it shifted great 2nd to 3rd gear hesitated just a little bit but nothing else. So I bought the truck at an absolute steal and drove home. I made it about 20 miles without any problems and then the O/D light started to flash and it started to slip a little bit. I was going about 70 mph and the rpm's went up by about 500-750. I was only about 3 miles from home so I continued home. About 2.5 miles later at a red light after exiting the highway it started to slip so bad that I couldn't get up to speed (45mph) so I practically rolled home. After getting it home I flushed about 8 quarts of transmission fluid using the cooler lines while I refilled at the same pace. Now at one point in this process fluid stopped flowing and I had to turn the truck off play with the cooler lines and turn it back on so that it would flow again. After finishing I took it for a test drive and it slipped about 100 feet down the road and if I would go to reverse and then drive it wouldn't shift into drive it would feel like neutral but If I turned the truck off waited 15 seconds and turned it back on it would go into any gear just as long as it was my first choice, my second choice would not engage. After this I pushed it home and scanned the computer and got the codes P0705 and P0174 which is the "Transmission Range Sensor" and "Too Lean Bank 2" . After cleaning the connector on the TRS and clearing the codes I tried to take it for a drive and backed down my driveway in reverse (1st choice) with no problems put it in drive (2nd choice) with no problems and drove about 100 feet before it started to slip again. No O/D light, No CEL, and No 4wd lights flashing just slipping and after changing gears a few times they start to not engage again like it did previously before I cleaned TRS connector. Also it slips in R, D, 2, and 1 it doesn't matter how you start out or whether you shift it manually or not. Sorry for such a long explanation I wanted to be as thorough as possible. I appreciate any suggestions or help that can be provided and Thank You in advance!

Time for a rebuild is the bottom line. We did ours around that same miles if I recall.

I'm starting to think the same thing but what I'm confused about is what would cause the slipping so quickly. It drove perfect for 20 miles and then total slippage. Also why does it take 100 feet of driving to begin to slip? It feels like nothing is wrong initially.

fluid gets warmed up and I would imagine all the seals and stuff get hot and it looses pressure.

Ok that might explain why it doesn't slip for about 100 feet of driving now but it doesn't explain why it drove perfect for 20 miles after I left the dealer. If it needs a complete rebuild why did it drive 20 miles without any problems.

our experience was much the same. Seemed a couple wierd shifts and she gets 20 miles down the road and barely makes it her Mom's house.

In our case there was just enough left after a cool down to put it on the car hauler and take it into the trans shop.

I have no idea but I would encourge you not to drive it but trailer it to someone that can read all the codes for the tranny.

Thanks for your help. Yeah I definitely cant drive it to anyone it won't go more than 100ft now after cool off so it will definitely have to be towed. I was hoping for someone to chime in with something as simple as solenoids, separator plate, or even the valve body which I could do myself but a rebuild isn't an option for me right now financially and I would kick myself if I sell it as is and it's an easy fix.

maybe at least spring for the diagnostic fee.

I am not avocating any place but I did mine at the local AMMCO. I know the guy and he does a great job. I did not a 90 days same as cash with them as it never comes at the right time for this.

Yeah I agree a diagnostic at a transmission shop is a must if I'm going to be able to sleep at night after selling it lol. Someone else mentioned that Aamco might finance the work I will have to give them a call. I ended up paying about $950 for the truck after the dealer refunded $200 so It's definitely worth repairing considering its in perfect condition and fully loaded. With that being said I should of realized the dealer already knew it had problems letting it go for $1,500 under blue book.
