My 1971 Ranger XLT

Hi Guys,

I'm a newbie - How can I find out if my '71 Ford Pick Up (w/360 V-8) has a C-4 or a C-6 Transmission?

Thanks,
Bob

Thank You very much! I had heard that this (C-6) was a really good transmission. This is good, as I will be doing some pulling with it.

I was looking online, and found a C-6 that was rebuilt w/5K miles on it for sale for $300. I don't need one (my truck only has 14K orig. miles) but it sounded like a good deal, and led me to inquire about mine.

Bob, Sorry bub, those old speedos roll over at 99,999 miles to 0. That old boy likely has 214,000 after 40 plus years on the road.

The C6 is considered bullet proof, and when time come have a local shop rebuilt it (about $600-800.00) don't pick up one that may or may not be in good shape.

Drive the truck for a few months, let is speak to you, you will have a better idea what to do next April than today.

Thanks for the input. I appreciate it. But, I verified that it had only 14K miles - it was a "barn find" up here. It had only been used for pulling hay wagons around on a farm. Also, a good friend of mine at a local shop looked at it - and said he believed it had that few miles. The kid who was selling it worked at his shop, and was originally going to do a restoration on it. But, he needed the $ for his other vehicle, and ended up selling it - to me!

Welcome to FTE

The odometers of these trucks read to 99,999.9 then return to ZERO.

Crooked used/new car dealers and owners alike were notorious for "rolling the odometers back."

It's real EZ on these trucks to remove the speedo cable driven gear. Remove speedo cable from trans, remove clip that retains gear, remove gear, reinstall speedo cable.

Do not believe a single word a seller claims. Private sellers lie just as well as used/new car dealers, lawyers, politicians and TV evangelists.

There is no way to verify the 14,000 'actual' miles. Most people that work in the autobiz today, don't have a single clue inre to 30+ year old vehicles.

It seems awkward, but whenever you "insert a picture" to one of these threads, the forum is looking for the picture somewhere on the web (which is always available) rather than from somewhere on your hard drive (which isn't always available).

Go to Image hosting, free photo sharing & video sharing at Photobucket and sign up for a free account. Then create an album for your truck. Upload any pics you want to post on FTE to that album. Have this album open on your computer when you want to post pics on FTE.

While you're making a post on FTE, select the pic you want to post from your Photobucket album. When the large version of the pic is open, right mouse click on it and select "View Image Info". The image info will be highlighted and will look something like this:
http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...ghtsafter1.jpg

Copy that highlighted info (right click / copy).

When you have the spot in your post where you want the pic to be placed, select the "Insert Image" icon at the top of the post (looks like a mountain) and paste (right click / paste) the image info you copied in the highlighted box (just shows "http://" when it opens).

Your pic will be placed in the post.

Hope that helps.

Bob, I haven't seen a photo of the truck, but trucks with 14,000 miles don't usually need a restoration, they will be pristine.

That averages to 350 miles a year for 40 years.
