Which is the better tranny for a f100 or F250 crew cab? Daily driver with some pulling and some highway. I here alot about the C6 but keep finding C4s in the junk yard.
Hey, that was helpful. I don't know, why? I worded that question poorly. Let me clarify my question. I realize the C6 is a heavy duty 3 speed or a step up from the C4 3 speed. ALL the trucks I have found in the junk yard in my area with AUTO so far come from the factory with the C4. This includes several 250s. I guess what I'm trying to figure out is if I need a C6 or if a C4 will suffice. Some pulling, hauling, and moderate highway use. Please inform me why the C6 is better?
Ken, Are you sure you are IDing them correctly? Both trannys are one piece alu. cases. The C4 was only used behind the 302. Which engine does your truck have?

I'm going to be up in your neck of the woods over the fourth. Any good junk yarding up there? I've looked at about 10 trucks over the weekend looking to swap power stuff and figure I may as well go with am AUTO. I've read prior threads and everybody talks about the C6. I've always been a manual kind of guy, top loaders, NP435, etc.. so I'm a little lost when it comes to these trannys. Give some insight John. Of all the trucks I looked at around here, about seven were AUTOs but about three were small blocks. So of the five I looked at, all of them were "G" for the trannys. That was two 250s as well. These were a 360 and a 390 and one was a crew cab special. All "G"s Most were 67-72 and two were a 76 and a 75. Any thoughts? Is Haynes wrong?
Go with a C-6. It may be a little harder to find, when you do get one, you will have the same $$$ in it for an over haul that you would for a C-4,or at least less. The C-6 is the crap!!!
Russell, My bad, you are correct 300s would have had them too. The C4 also has a bolt on bell, I guess I had the FMX on my mind when I posted. Who's Joe?
Ken, I would love to meet you if you have time to stop, and we can get together. Shoot me a mail to my address below. If you are driving the truck when you come through, I have a used C6 for a FE for sale. I think I have the flexplate, linkage, and kickdown too. The FE 360/390 had a C6 behind it, even though the book says the C4 was available, none have be found.

From having taken a C-6 out of my Bronco I can tell you it is much heavier and bigger than a C-4.
I doubt a C-4 would live very long behind the same 351 while being abused. The main advantages to the C-4 is it is smaller and lighter and fits well from the factory in a 1978 Mustang II.
