80 through 86 and it will have to be a 300, 302, 351 truck for the trans to bolt to your engine

The speedo gear may be a little different depending on the gear ratio, but you will have a parts truck, so you can make anything work. If you have a 4wd, the speedo cable is in the transfer case, and you can just re-use your old transfer case. If it's not 4wd, you can easily change it over to 4wd if you get a 4wd parts truck. If you are not going to do any extended heavy work or towing, I would look for a AOD that has the overdrive gear. It may need a rebuild though. The other tranny you may find is a c6, and they hold up well, but are gas hogs on the highway. They are excellent for local use though.

I just want to keep it 2wd but if I found a 4x4 could I still use it if I took off the transfer case?

Short answer...No. The 4x4 tranny has a different tailshaft housing specifically designed to bolt a t-case to. You need to find a 2wd with the same bed length as yours because you will need the driveshaft from it also.

Ok thanks I didn't think about the driveshaft length

If you find a parts truck, I could use some interior parts. I'm 1 hour east of Knoxville.

I need the horn pad from the steering wheel. I would also like a good rodent free seat and a blue dashpad. I'd basically just like to look at it after you get the parts you need.

You could use a 4x4 tranny if you installed the transfer case also. Just as long as it was the same wheelbase as your truck, the 4x4 rear driveshaft should work. I know it sounds weird to have a transfer case with a 2wd truck, but it can be handy backing up heavy trailers and other stuff by putting it in low range. Makes a "tractor" out of it. It won't hurt it not to have a front driveshaft and all the frontend stuff.

Thats a good idea. I might do that myself! I have 2.75 gear in the rear now, if I use a t-case I can tow in low speeds alot better. hmmm
