Yes, hook the dwell meter up (see link below). After your engine is at operating temperature, have a friend rev your truck to 3000 RPMs. Next, use your timing gun and shoot it at your balancer. Then, adjust the distributer until the timing light reads the 38 degree mark all while the truck is reving at 3000 RPMs. Once you have the distributor adjusted, lock down the distributor and bring the truck down to a normal idle (800 RPMs). Finally, note/write down the inital timing by shooting the timing light again at the balancer to read the timing marks while the truck is idling (this is your initial timing). Your initial should be somewhere between 8 and 12 degrees.

There will be a scale or hash marks with numbers on them located on your harmonic balancer... Should read as such:

ATC 1|0....0....1|0....2|0....3|0 BTC

In order to read exactly 38* you may have to invest in an adjustable timing light or you can do your best at guesstimating where 38* would be. (just make additional marks beyond the '30' equal as the ones before it) They also make what's call 'timing tape' where you can add a larger timing scale to you balancer by way of a printed image that adheres to your balancer.
