77 400 timing set

I have been searching on here to find out what the best way is to set the timing either straight up or 4 advanced. Can't really seem to find a definat answer. What I have is a 400 with long tube headers, weiand 8010 intake edelbrock 1405 and a 2121 comp cam timing set everything else is stock. In advance thanks for your time much appreciated

The timing needs to be set *6-*8 before top dead center at idol with the vacuum line disconnected and plugged then run it up to 2300RPM's and set that to somewhere in the range of *28 to *32 BTDC if you get more then that there is a small allen screw inside the dizzy vac can adjust that until you get close to that, Mechanical advance around 25*

If your cam is producing high cylinder pressures it might ping at those settings so you might have to go lower on top end,You kinda need to play around with the settings to work with the cam and the crappy gas.

Ping is a death sentence for an engine.

He is talking about the cam timing not the ignition timing.

Pretty much any of these will do it. 1977 FORD 6.6L/400 Ford Modified Timing Chain and Gear Sets - SummitRacing.com

I misunderstood his question also.

I don't know the answer. You might want to post it in the 335 engine section.

Put it straight up with a aftermarket camshaft. That is how I installed mine and it runs great.

Torque is definitely they way I want to go. But if I advance it 4* will the stock valve train and cam take it? Or will I end up with pre detonation

If its a STOCK cam go straight up, For the reason you dont know if Ford made it 4* advanced already or it could be 4* retarded, If it is an aftermarket cam go with the advanced.

Put it instraight up. The 4* slot will bee too much. Better yet degree it in.
