Following this post intently.
My truck (F250, 5.8L, 2WD, 1992) sometimes stalls out when I shift into reverse. I currently have the tranny (E4OD) out of the vehicle because I am replacing the seals. I have 90,000 miles on her, and would like to get her running better.

So then I drove it hard, romping it from 1st to second chirped the times, which is a good thing is I had a shift kit, but on 37" military times its not so good. Also, died a gain in reverse. Reverse feels like its locking up, shuttering and dropping the rpm. Just doesnt sound right in reverse. Could it be I need to reset the ECU?

i was SO STOKED! thought for sure I had found my issue. But it made little difference...I unplugged the battery, letting it sit then I'll take it for another round.
O.k.
Here's something else for you to look for.

Do you have a ground strap going from the transmission to the negative battery ground cable at the starter ????

I think I may have "stumbled" (no pun intended) upon a problem I've had with my E4OD for quite a few years.

I kept on seeing this silver ground strap in my "truck repair box" that I vaguely remember belonging to the truck.

I don't remember whether I removed it, or whether my transmission guy removed it and gave it back to me after a rebuild.

Anyhow, long story short....... I'm pretty sure that ground strap HAS to be there so that the transmission pumps/solenoids have a good noise free ground which bypasses the ignition/alternator noise.

In my truck I have a MSD single spark ignition box. It's a very "hot" ignition system and I have spark leaks around the coil and the spark plug boots.
My next order of business will be to install the MSD noise filter AND install my phantom "ground strap", hopefully this weekend.

We'll see in my case whether this corrects my electronic stumble AND harsh reverse engagement.

More stuff for you to check and think about.

Bob

Good point. I will doublecheck my grounds. Maybe I can run a direct cable from the negative terminal to the transmission just a test reverse function.

So just for anyone who wants to know. I took a 600+ mile round-trip road trip with the truck towing a trailer and a bed full.

Going down there with an empty load I got 9.6 miles per gallon this was with overdrive on and off manually cycling it. On the way back with a full load I left overdrive off, then I got 11.5 miles per gallon. Mind you, this is a 3.50 geared truck with tall heavy eight ply military tires.

The important thing is, the train he didn't give out, and got me home safe, in fact it pulled just great. Just another reason to not get rid of it, good solid truck, hopefully I can get this reversed thing figured out soon.

I just had my transmission rebuilt for very very harsh shifts. And if i remember right it might of died once or twice in reverse. It ended up being a pressure regulator or something like that in the valve body and when it went out it started eating into the valve body. It didn't do it all the time but when it did you thought you were going to throw a u joint out. The shop that rebuilt it is very reputable and he said this is a common problem for the e40d. But beware after they tear into your tranny and realize that everthing else is toast your out 3 grand. Also my truck hasn't had the vaccuum canister for about 3 years now and haven't had any problems from it.

E40D shift issues fixed?

This is for "mdula " ( or anyone with same issue), Hi, Was wondering if you ever fixed your trans? I have a '95 F250 with the same issue. ONLY acts up in warm weather. Now that it's colder, hasn't shifted hard for over a week. It was doing it daily in hot weather. Been dealing with the issue for the whole summer. Thanks for any input you have. Tony
PS. Replaced VSS, MLPS, cleaned every transmission plug with electrical spray, then used dialectic grease. Checked all grounds. Checked all fuses. Had this problem on two different earlier occasions and first time (about 2 years ago),was ground wire from neg battery terminal to inner fender was loose. Second time (about 1 year ago),was digital speedometer went out.

Well you'd better off making your own thread at this point. Diagnostics will be a little difficult now, since it's not acting up anymore.
