Around here way over time is par for the course.

What is the huge mistake? When they built our hose it was supposed to have vaulted ceilings in the kitchen and dining room. They ordered the wrong trusses and it didn't. It was caught early but the trusses were installed and it was sheated.... They were told to change it! We settled on a pretty good size discount to leave it as is. So as far as I am concerned, yes, if they made a huge mistake they can either fix it or start negotiating.

Good luck Gerry

Ironically, I find myself doing the same thing I was doing 13 years ago when the new broke. I was filling out a public sewer bid that morning and was doing the same thing this morning. I was the low bidder back then. Maybe with some luck I will be again today!

I normally do the grinding in front of the shop and further away from anything flammable but I moved the frame over so I could work in the shop and I just wanted to try the new grinder.
Gotta watch them sparks Back when I was building houses I was cutting an i-beam with a gas cutoff saw, didn't notice the sparks were hitting my jeans until I felt the heat from them burning.

Also, a lot of times payments to the contract are tied to "milestones" attained in the completion of a large project. For example, I pay 1/3 of the total contract when my roof is removed, 1/3 after it is roughed in, and the last 1/3 after it is inspected. It gives the roofer incentive to get the job done, because ultimately, the profit is in the last third. (Some roofers want some down before they start -- but I basically tell them the day you show up and remove the roof you'll get the first payment) It only takes a day to remove a roof.

I wish I could help you more - I think Mitch has another possible solution for you though.

Mitch - Thanks for the thought of reps... I am out of ammo for most in the 1 page thread too...
The trades I deal with get paid when the job is complete. The electrician that wired the last house never did send me a bill and that was 19yrs ago

Your lawyer is a good move.

This is one of the big reasons I do my own work. Then I end up with too much to get done by myself. No good solution........

EDIT: Have you tried to reason with the contractor..?? Be better than court.
I'm the same Roy, anything I can legally do I will. Only part I paid a trade for on my current reno is furnace/wtr heater installs and gas fireplace hookup, need to be a licensed gas fitter for those. I did pay for the roof shingling though as I wasn't hanging off a two storey roof without fall arrest gear which I don't have. Of course the reno has taken 6 yrs but almost done now, then it's time to move

Morning all.

Gerry, dealing with contractors can be a pain. You can take them to court, but that will only make the process slower and will tick them off if they are still working on your garage. You can try to negotiate the error, and that may work. Have them correct it, or reduce the fees. That would be my first step.

Morning everyone. 45F here this morning too... That has been par for the course, only difference I notice is that it doesn't get as hot in the afternoon and it gets colder earlier. The wife wants the heat to the house on now too - which she didn't when we moved in a month ago. I have the thermostat set at 60F... But the heat never goes on.

Steve - Yep, I will never forget 9/11. Tried to rep you again, but as previously stated all out of ammo.

29 y/o now....figure by the time I get there...retirement age will have moved a few more years to the right although I do hope to have the option to stop working years before SS kicks in (if it does).
Go for 30 yrs Active Duty and then call it quits.......

Speaking of which, I really enjoy having the VW Golf TDI to buzz around town in, but I'm seriously thinking of selling the thing. I moved jobs where I work and I spend a lot more nights at work (don't ask where I work....). I just don't commute more than 2-3 times a week anymore.

I know as soon as I sell the car, I'll get orders in 2 years to move to DC and I'll want the car back.
Hey Steve........Where do you spend your working hours ??

(Didn't ask "where"......)

Back in the late 70's I was stationed in Fallon NV. Electronic Warfare Range. Great Duty !!...
You folks used to come up and visit from time to time........
