You have to change the whole instrument cluster to get a factory tach, but it's easy and you can swap your original speedometer into the new cluster so you keep your mileage. Check the classifieds and eBay for replacement clusters.

If you want an aftermarket tach, you can use the factory wires at the instrument cluster connector.

I think you got a couple procedure mixed up. You use the jumper and the buttons to change the calibration of the odometer. (if you change tire sizes)

To ad an OEM tach, check out my article in the tech section:

No, that's not possible. The PSOM has no tach input.

I have a 2005 F-150 FX4. You can hold down the button for the IP and then start the truck. It will then say "sweep guages". You can now press the button and scroll through the menu until you get to "tach". It will then display tach in real time. There are other things like DTC's, Battery volts, CAN messages, etc...

Hope this helps...

I think this only exists in newer trucks than yours. (2002 and up?)

going back to the original post, i have a 91 300 5spd no stock tach, but what i did was just mounted a small sunpro on the column and it looks sharp. saves the dash re-do, and it looks good enough

Back in '83 Radio Shack sold a digital tach/clock unit that fits in that little cubby hole on the right. Pretty nifty. Install was easy, one lead to juice, the other to the coil terminal "tach". It still works to this day.
