Another distributor thread
Hey all,
I'm in the process of rebuilding a '78 F250 with a 460. I'd like to replace the distributor mainly because I do not know the condition of the current distributor, maybe I can increase power with a new one, everything else is new and shiny right now and if I can reduce the number of wires great.
I know I don't need a high dollar piece as my current engine is mild in performance.
I'm looking at a Proform 66980B or MSD 8580 distributor but I'm looking for input from others. I've read various threads on here and although many of the debates have been heated I'm still a little confused on the details.
Any help would be appreciated.

This is just my opinion. But I would use an HEI like GM used for years. I have seen them for 460 Fords.
Now for my opinion. I HATE the FORD MODULE ELECTRONICS. For one when I owned my 86 F250 4x4 460 I replaced the distributor 3 times in 12 years, 60,000 miles. Bushings wearing out. I replaced 4 modules. HEAT. I owned a 79 CK20 Chevy 350 with HEI other than re-curving it I ran it 180,000 miles only replacing the cap & rotor a few times. That distributor went over 300,000 miles & 20 years that I know of.
Again just my opinion & experience.
In fact the module on the 86 failed with my 10,000# TT behind it on the freeway in downtown Las Vegas. I got it off the freeway 112 degrees outside. I got a buddy to come in from Pahrump 65 miles away with parts I got it running & pulled the last 300 miles to our place in western central Nevada. When I got the trailer unhooked I sold the truck I was so pissed off.
