I had the same thing happen. Heard that you have to run it low. Now, I wait until I get the 250 mile or lower warning. Then I go to a truck stop and fill it to the top. No more problems.

Thank You all for the info, I will be running it dry from now on. I might even drain it when I get home.

I should have asked earlier what everyone's DEF consumption is for there trucks, mine was over 5000 miles on 2 1/2 gal.

WTH is going on here? The alarm finally reset after an hour of talking to myself and the truck.

Bottom line is has anyone else had the premature DEF 500 mi warning??? 😱
My 2011 had that issue, as well as my 2015. There is a reset program for that issue. Trouble reading full.

Also I had my 15 read 500 till empty and count down from 1/2 tank. Filled it still read empty, for 3 days. Had to take it the dealer for that also. This requires a actual re-flash.

2.5 gal for 5k miles. You are doing really well. I range between 800 to 1000 miles per gallon... 1200 miles per gallon isn't unheard of though. Some of it also depends on how fresh the DEF is.

Filling up all the way certainly helps. When I get the countdown it takes just over 4 gal. to fill it up. I usually try to fill it up when it says 1/2 full... then the 2.5 gal jug just fits. Just my .02.

I also agree that there are some known DEF reset issues. And mine hit the countdown a few months ago and it took several restarts (days) to reset as well - to the point I was about to make a dealer appointment, but alas, didn't need to.

I've had mine in the shop twice for the DEF, South of Saint Louis I got the alarm, filled it up and after another 50 miles it still hadn't cleared. Went to the dealer to watch the mechanic overfill it, then slam it back and forth in drive to reversea dozen times for them to tell me i didn't put enough in it.
Did the same thing 6 months later so took it to my local dealer and was told because it had been done before I had to go back to the dealer in Saint Louis and he had to fix it.
Long story short 5 miles down back rough roads it cleared and I keep it full and don't let it get to low/500 mile warning.
