HOW CAN YOU TELL IF YOUR HPOP IS BAD

Maybe some remember but I have a hot start issue . My icp was at 247 and ipr 77% when not starting , truck would start run fine till it hits running temp then cuts off . Well have motor apart , pulled IPR yesterday and seems ok screen a tiny hole ( can barely see ) in it and maybe dished a little . Have a new one and not much diff . So i pulled intake and ERG cooler ( and for those welded cooler haters mine is in great shape and intake clean and dry ) . Got HPOP cover off and the back bolt that everybody whines about under EGR cooler exhaust fitting 8mm gear wrench gets with no problem . But back to my problem . I do have the updated cover with the channel cut into it and tried to put air into the top of the pump . I heard no leaks but did hear a bubbling sound in the oil cooler area . Anybody got any idea where to go from here ?

Pull the oil filter out Dave

If you have air coming out the Oil Filter or Girggling sound there thats normaly a sign HPOP Bad

It dont make sense to me though I would think if the Pumps Bad it would be bad Hot or Cold and not just Hot

Can you post a pick of the groove thing????

where are you putting air in ICP hole???

Them Welded Coolers are Great its just when they Dont weld them Right they create a Mess you welded yours right so it will last forever

Benny i was putting air in the top of the pump that goes in the discharge tube it feeds the IPR i think . The cover is off . There is a O ring there to and in good shape. At first i thought i had the updated cover but i don't think so now looks like the discharge tube did it but theres not a hole in the tube .

I just changed out an HPOP on a 2004 truck with a 2003 engine in it last Friday. Let me tell you, this discharge tube was definitely rubbing with the underside of the cover. When I removed the pump, and tried to spin it by hand, I must've hit a "dead spot" with it because I couldn't turn it anymore. And yes, if you hear air leaking back into the oil filter housing, the HPOP is bad. Another test to try, is to apply air pressure through a rubber tipped air nozzle directly into the branch tube with the HPOP removed. By doing this, you are essentially doing a high pressure oil system air leak check, with the HPOP and IPR removed from the equation, leaving only the rest of the high pressure oil system to check for any other issues.

Benny I can get it to my albums but that's about it . You know te groove is so perfect looking it all most looks factory cut , but it is not the same as the updated cover. I will check the rest of the system with air tomorrow and see what happens . I want to make a fitting with a hose on it to clamp on the stand pipe .

By the pics posted, that is definitely not what the underside of an updated cover looks like. BUT, it does look like SOMETHING was done to tweak the cover to prevent the discharge tube from contacting it.
