2000 Excursion flashing OD light and Beeps

I am having some issues with my '00 7.3 excursion. The overdrive light is flashing and there is 5 audible beeps to follow. I just changed the VSS with a motorcraft one and after I clear the codes then take it on short drive the light flashes again (I have cleared it and drove it 3 times with the light still flashing). The check engine light comes on as well reading P0500. The speedometer is functioning normally and the trans is shifting fine. Also there is no abs light on and the breaks feel fine. Hopefully someone has had this same issue with a solution.... I appreciate anyone's solutions/troubleshooting. Thanks!

You are having two separate issues.

The OD light can be caused by several things including what you mentioned. When the OD light flashes you will have codes stored. P0500 can be related to more than just the VSS.

The five beeps is the Airbag light being burnt out. When you turn the key on, I'll bet you don't have an airbag (SRS) light right? The five beeps of five is an audible warning so you know there is an issue.

Ken once again you have taught me something new I didn't know that about the air bag light and beeping.

Now as far as the OD light flashing I was having an issue with mine flashing changed VSS and it still came on but would go away. It came and went. Well I just got around to tearing the trans down and found the OD return spring retainer ring was off and center support is junk. But the funny thing was it was still shifting Ok but sometimes it shuttered. So what I think was going on was as the coast clutch drum was moving all around and the forward VSS won't pick up a signal sometimes. Actually I have no idea what the deal was. So I hope this isn't the case for you Derek.

So hopefully Ken you can give us a little more on the P0500

There is no "forward VSS." There is a turbine speed sensor (TSS) where you describe a sensor.

P0500 Possible causes:

Open in VSS (+)/VSS (-) harness circuit.
Short to GND or SIG RTN in VSS (+)/VSS (-) harness circuit.
Short to PWR in VSS (+)/VSS (-) harness circuit.
Damaged VSS.
Damaged PCM.

Thanks for the correction. So then the forward is the TSS and rear is the VSS. See I was thinking it was the other way around...DA

The front sensor in the trans is the TSS (Turbine Speed Sensor.) The sensor on the rear of the transmission is the OSS (Output Speed Sensor.) The sensor on the rear axle is the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor.)
