My "new" 72 F-100 Hooptie Rat Rod, New to the FE 360 Game
Hey everyone! My name is Tommy and I live in Chico, CA going to school for my B.S. in Construction Management. I've had quite a few good rides in the past from a chopped 64 Chevy Suburban, bagged and body dropped 72' C10, 2005 F-150, and now I have a 72' F100, and a Cammed 2000 Camaro SS.
So I just picked up this 72 F100 with an FE 360 in it the other day on the cheap, $1,000. it runs and drives but a little rough, It's leaking some oil and some gas as well. I bought this gasket kit off of eBay. And these valve covers. I want to start pretty basic with going about putting on all these gaskets, kind of start at the top and hopefully fix the leaks before I have to pull the engine and do the oil pan. I haven't cleaned the engine enough to pinpoint where its leaking from, I honestly just drove it home (a good 100 mile drive) it was sketchy but made it.
Anyways I was looking for some tips on where to start with this big block. And what else you'd check to try to get it running better, I am trying to make this a budget build. It'll probably need a lot more then engine work too, brakes, suspension, exhaust.. Well thanks for reading my thread, any and all information is appreciated.

Ooooooh. Someone who knows HTML! Welcome to FTE.
I'm in the SF Bay Area with a 70 Bump and a Cal Poly grad in city planning. Here's my <a href="https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1154885-hio-silvers-lo-buck-bumpside-build.html"> <B>build thread</B></a>.
I recently wrote a post for a new owner with some ideas on how to go about considering your next steps. Here's the URL: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post11865967

^^ I like the must do's, nice to do, and upgrade thing. Your totally right, and for me right now I think it's gonna need to be some nicer tire's and brakes, fix all my safety issues first. I think mostly everything else is working and there and just needs a minor rebuild or tune. I want to be able to take this thing 150 miles to our family cabin in the Sierra Nevada National Forest, there's no cell service up there so reliability is going to be crucial before going up there.

Ha! Yeah man. Not many of us in here who can write HTML.
Btw, it might be a clusterfark in SF due to the GG Bridge's 75th anniversary. Here's a link for your perusal: Golden Gate Bridge 75th Anniversary :: Golden Gate Bridge 75th Anniversary
Hack Patrol!
No cell service? THAT is "getting away from it all". Bring your Glock for those unanticipated close encounters. We let loose with AKs and an SKS a few years ago.

Prolly more gasket set than you need, & one can get by without html experience too. Most times the valve covers will be leaking, along with the intake manifold. You will need to block your valve covers to reverse the indents from over tightening, RTV gasket is also a very good way to reseal the intake. Those are the top 2 areas for trouble.
Have fun.
