My Truck is smoking and it driving me bananas
Well when I first bought this truck a few Weeks ago the guy told me the smoke was normal for a diesel engine with this many miles (219xxx) so I was like...Okay.
but now I'm starting to think he was full of dookey! I've been noticing other trucks that are older than mine that don't blow as much smoke.
The smoke is blue'ish in color and has the normal diesel smell, it always puffs smoke except when I'm at full speed at that point it stops, when I take my foot off the excelerator like on the freeway I can instantly see a puff of blue smoke. It smokes slot when ita idling as well.
Is there anything I can do? I'll take some video of it tomorrow if it would help.

Video will help. But i can tell you now that your problem is air intrustion. Look at all your injectors for leaks, if they are not leaking im sure someone can give you the link to a good set of return lines with good o-rings, i dont know what it is. There are also areas that you could check, fuel filter, where you buy your diesel, your oil, ( that was my problem, needed changed) it also could be more than just something as simple as that you could have bad rings in your fuel lines that are on your selector. I have yet to change mine but im sure they will be a pain.

you need a ferret timing adapter and what i have read it works best with an adjustable timing light here is a link to a ferret timing adapter:
Ferret Instruments , V765-01 Diesel Injection Detector / Timing Adapter - 765

I didn't have much time to look at it today but I will tomorrow. I did however notice that the faster I'm going on the freeway (like 70 mph) the worst the smoke is when I release My foot off the excelerator but it's like one puff off blue smoke then it's fine, it's weird it's fine when I'm moving.... SMS always smokes when at idle. I'll make a video tomorrow

I agree totally, leaning more towards guides tho since it seems like it is worse when she lets off, rings like to do it all the time from my experience.
So if it is guides, heads have to come off and look to spend 350-400 for a good valve job. No idea what it costs for a shop to pull em, you will also need a top-end gasket set (valley pan and headgaskets, maybe exhaust) good time to put studs in also if you can afford it and ever plan to turbo it.

Yeah, Depending on how it was treated, 220K is enough time to develop blowby on that scale. The only other thing I can think of, is your timing is WAY off, whichi would cause a smokey condition at all times. Have you had any IP work done at all on this thing?
The ferret is a good investment, Ive used one before, and they are worth the money, Ill be buying one here very soon.
Just for *****s, you should crawl up in the engine bay, and see where in relation to the "line" on the IP is in relation to the timing cover. My "line" on the IP is 1/8"-3/16" to the drivers side of the "line" on the timing cover at 6 degrees BTDC. 6 degrees will not give you that smokey condition, but if the pump has been off, and is a tooth off, it could.
If the thing has never been apart or tampered with, Id side with the guys who said Blowby... And that being the case, really the only solution is a rebuild.
