tires off,how do i know if the bearing is bad

Anyone want to phone tech? I have the tire off, the cover pulled and im looking at something i have never seen before.

i have never seen 4x4bearings... this is NOT like my boat trailer bearing.

i was told its either my ball joints or bearings.. or both(its old)

how do i check whats in front of me?
(916)956-2141 if anyone wants to walk me through what im looking at.

ABOUT WHEEL BEARINGS AND BALL JOINTS

If you don't already have one get a Haynes manual you can get them at fleet farm or an auto parts store. you are going to need a special socket for the locknuts.with the tire on grab the wheel and push in and out you notice any movement that is wheel bearings need to be repacked. Then grab the top and bottom of the tire and and rock it up and down,if you notice alot of slop that is ball joints. On the ball joints it is always a good idea to have someone watching the ball joints while you are moveing the tire up and down. You will also need a ball joint tool to replace them and in the repair book it will tell you how to prestress the ball joints to prevent premature wear. On the wheel bearings I only use Mobil 1 synthetic grease it lasts alot longer and you can get it at some fleet farms ,it is more expesive at auto parts stores. when you take it all apart lay the parts out in order that you took them off,and check the diagrams to make sure that parts were actually put on there the right way. Too often people just put stuff together to sell it. Hope I could be of some help.

thanks. yeah much of what im doing is a two man job but i dont have a reliable #2 on standby. I have the book, which has had almost no useful information for me. it reads more like a service manual and states the obvious every other page. i need detailed work instructions for this build. im looking for another book. specifically for tk-55 trans rebuild.

Bit the bullet and got it into wilson offroad and had some work done but just cant swing the trans work. I heard it when it broke a tooth in 2nd gear and hope my quick action will keep this from becoming too expensive.

The sun comes out for a week so i should get it out and apart over the next few days. I do have a trany guy to double check everything but specs are my downfall righ now. Im not finding them anywhere in tech data.
