Going against the grain - Planning electric fan install

Well, I know that most here do not recommend electric fans because the stock fan can move so much air, but after doing some looking over the net I have seen successful conversions and have decided to do an electric fan conversion when I do my Mishimoto aluminum radiator install. I'm planning on using two 16" electric fans that will pull a total of around 6500 CFM. That combined with the claimed 30% more cooling with the Mishimoto all aluminum radiator I should be fine since I never tow anything over 10k.

Most of the conversions I found online used the flexalite kit for the 7.3 that uses two 15" fans and modified it to mount to the 6.0, the only problems reported were failed fan controllers. Since I am piecing together my own kit I am planning on using two separate controllers so just in case one fails I still have one fan pulling air through to get me by. I also have some leftover sheet metal to make a new air-dam similar to the flexalite kit.

I plan on updating the thread as parts come in. Worst case, if it is a fail, I have another project I can use the fans on, so I won't be out much.

I have thought of adding an electric fan so my a/c will run better. I live in Boulder City and when temps are around 110 my a/c doesn't work too well

That's a LOT for the A/C to overcome.

I would have the system checked before adding an electric fan. I'm in Vegas and mine works great on even the hottest days, even with the Excursion having 2 evaporators.

Yea. Y'all should have your A/C checked. I live in Alabama an I can't turn my A/C on max because it will turn into a Popsicle.

I know at some point Ford "updated" the amount of Freon to go into the system so I'd urge a system check also.

To the OP: The factory fan moves about 10K CFM which is quite a bit more than the electrics you plan on installing

I know the regular fan moves a ton of air when its fully engaged but according to my scan gauge that isn't very often. When I'm driving at freeway speed my a/c works great but if I'm sitting in traffic at 115 degrees I'm just getting cool air not cold and the fan is only 25 percent engaged. I wish their was some way to override the computer and engage the fan manually.

If the fan is only at 25% then the engine is telling it "I'm not hot enough to need more air" meaning that the ECT/EOT and WTF ever else parameters the fan uses are good. Try getting the AC vacuumed down and recharged with the higher amount of Freon now required and see if that makes a difference. It helped my 04 a LOT. If that still doesn't make a difference then try the electric fans in addition to the factory fan (if that's possible).

Hey Tim, If I missed it, what are the new quantities? Want to compare that to what's on my sticker. Thanks, Mike.

To be honest, Mike, I don't remember. I want to say 44oz.

Tonka also suffers from the sitting-in-traffic problem.

Tim, do you remember WHEN they changed the amount of refrigerant?

Cheezit rebuilt my AC last summer, and I'm curious to know if it was before then.

Incidentally, bumping the idle helps some with AC temps. Bumping the idle from whatever-is-stock to 725 helped noticeably.

It's been several years and I'm sure Moe got the right amount in yours. IIRC it was 06 or 07 when I found that more had been added.

I'm not saying it's an end all cure all, but it sure helps if everything is up to snuff. I know that even with our stupid high temperatures last year I had pretty dang good AC but maybe I like the heat more than the average person and it doesn't bother me as much.....
