How reliable would a 1970's ford f100 ranger be? My dad knows someone selling one for 500 dollars he says he could get 1000 but will sell it for 500 any way what are the specs on this truck. Im mostly concernd about the engine. i curently have a dodge 318 the trans went out. and i was decideing rather to get a transmision for my dodge or get this.

How reliable are these trucks
How much horsepower does that 460 put out. what would the quater mile times be (guesing)

Gas milage? my guess would be 5-10 mpg right? should i go for it or just fix my dodge? (dodge has a 318 with a edel brock 4 brl carb)

A 70's F100 is a very reliable truck a had mine 7 yrs and the only trouble I've had out of it was a thermastat and a duraspark box, they tend to give warning that they are going to die like shuting off for a sec. or two and running fine other wise they are very reliable if in good shape and taxes and ins. is much lower than a new truck. you should get about 8-12 MPG with a 460 if its stock about 250-300 HP but they got good torq, duno 1/4 mile times, it depends and for $500 get it. I'm about to buy a wrecked 79' for $500 for parts. The truck may need some parts replaced every now&then but hey it's 25 yrs old.

What year is the Dodge? I have a Ram(95 w/360) and a '77 f-100.
I would rather drive the Ford anyday. If I were you I would get the Ford. $500 for a truck that runs is a good deal, you could sell it and make a couple hundred if you don't like it.
73-79 Fords are the best model truck ever made. They are very fun to work on, restore and modify. You can find the parts you might need right here up in the rigtht hand corner of your screen.
About the HP and 1/4 time I'm not sure but I know the 460 is a torque monster!
Buy the Ford

Being as old as it is,
would it take a... lot of abuse?

with that much torque i know im going to be spinning the tires all the time.

460 in a F100 ?
The factory never made it that way.

IF it has a 460 >
You would only spin the tires if it was empty and geared low and you punch it.

I don't spin the tires on my truck ever, BY Choice !

Find out what year it is and what tranny it has. I don't think that there are a lot of F100's with 460's. Most had 360's until 76 then 351M's. I would avoid mashing it until you get a good idea of how dependable things are, I've had my share of $500 trucks both good and bad. Try to find out what kind of rear end you have, I know its a Ford 9" but what the gearing is and whether its a posi-lok or trac-lok or Limited slip or open. Post the VIN and rear diff tag.

P.S. Welcome to FTE

Rabid Elephant ~~~

You had a question about 1/4 mile times...mine would be pretty slow..... as with my built 460 in the '74 F-100 it spins the tires with ease...

In fact, instead of blowing the horn at some numb-nut on the road, I'll usually just womp on it and the back tires will spin - and that is with high-dollar Michelins. For this reason, it's not a truck built for traction in mind; it's pretty light weight back there.

My mileage is usually about 10 MPG (and I drive 110+ miles a day)
