How to preserve the serial number on the frame?

Howdy!

So, I'm about to have my 1956 F-250 frame sandblasted and powder coated, but I'm concerned that the serial number is likely to be sandblasted off, or filled in with powder coat (because the SN imprint is faint and hard to read).

Does anybody have any idea how to work around this? Should I just mask the SN off during the sandblasting/powder coating, and then paint it later? What do restorers usually do?

Here is a picture of the SN. It's located on the passenger side, where the front of the cab attaches to the frame.

Thanks!

Certain acids will clean out the imprints and remove light rust. I'd do that then instruct the PC'er to mask the area before coating. Paint the area with silver paint after PC'ing.

A proper restoration wouldn't be powder coated. But since you are going to powder coat, what Ross suggested is exactly what a professional shop would do in your situation. Clean the area with an acid to remove the rust and return the area to clean, bare metal. Mask off the number area for any prep or refinish work, including sandblast and powder coat. Then come back later with a similar color paint just heavy enough to color up the spot, but not enough to fill the stamping.
