My #8 glow plug is bad and I'm not sure how to go about changing it. Do I take the wheel well out like the right side? Or can I get to it by removing the air filter? Also are there any photos or videos out there to help out with this? Thanks

 

Remove air intake, remove GP bar/harness (depends on what year), use 10 MM deep scoket to remove GP, install new GP, install bar/harness, install air intake. If you have the wire harness, 04-07 MY, be careful removing it. They tend to break really easy. The best trick I know to get it off is wrap a piece of wire around the in-set (sp???) of the plug and pull. They still break that way too. They are pretty brittle.

How do you know for sure you have a bad GP. IIRC #8 GP code is common when you have a bad GPCM. There is a way to test the GP/harness to insure you have a bad GP. Let me know if you need instructions for it.

the warmer months here. Then after the first cold snap here my truck had problems starting but if I jumped it then it would start. Then came the battery light saying the charging system was not working proper. So replaced the batteries still would not start replaced the alternator still would not start. Talked with a few people they said it might be the starter. When I try to start it sounds like a loud drill so I bought a starter and a diagnostics tool. Ran the diagnostics tool and it said glow plug #8 was bad.



I still have the new starter and 4 new glow plugs. I have a volt meter now is there some way to check the GPCM to see if it’s working? I don’t know I’m lost this is my first diesel would just have it towed to a dealer but it would cost me a lot as the nearest dealer is 50 miles one way from me. Last time it started was a month ago had a tow truck come out to the airport and give me a jump took 30 mins but it started no luck since then.

 

You need to check FICM voltages also.

Sounds to me like you have some other issues going on. 1 bad glow plug is not going to keep your truck from starting. It may make it crank a little longer than norm, but won't keep it from starting.

Start with the no start thread that is in the tech folder.

 

so i ahd a very hard start problem. did everythin glowpulgs,IPR,IPC,lighter oil,FICM mod. nothing helped. I cahnged the glow plug control module, this thing cranks up right away! i had the dealership tell me i had 4 glowplugs that were testing weak,even though i just replaced them. i got the glow plug control module on ebay for $200.

 

My number 8 gp isn't working, I know that because I could see the wire broke off of it when I was doing my standpipes. I don't worry about it, I'll fix it next time I'm in there, but you can tell there's one cylinder that causes a little commotion on a cold morning start. Like Texans said, one bad one won't prevent the truck from starting, unless you have other issues at work there.

Thanks working 12 hour shifts 5 days a week is starting to get to me.

So I had a few guys I work with hear what the truck sounded like when I tried to start it. All said it's the starter. The sound it makes is like a loud drill something is spinning when you turn the key just whatever is spinning is not catching on to what it should. Maybe if I get a video of the sound it would help you all tell me if these guys are right.

 

Have someone look at the front of the engine when your trying to start it. If the starter drive isn't engaging the ring gear the serpentine belt will not move because the engine is not turning over.

 

Belt has not moved since I placed the new alternator in. I know that because the belt still has some of my blood on it when I put it on the alternator.

Tool I bought did not work so I pulled the belt by hand to get it on the alternator.

 

Truck is fixed it was the starter! The old starter did not even look like the new one I bought. Put the new starter in went and turned the key and it started right up no problems. Also the check engine light and battery light are also off. Thanks for the help everyone!
