Smile 4R100 Transmission

Hey Guys
Just purchased an 04 F250 SD with 63360 miles on it last week and I was looking at the transmission section in the mnaufacture's s Scheduled Maintenance Guide to see if I should have the transmission service and I noticed the only maintenance they call for is a fluid change. Are there any filters, screens etc. that need to be changed?

Dave

That depends on which transmission you have. If you have a gas engine the trans is a 4R100 and does not have a scheduled filter change. If it is a diesel there is a filter near the radiator that should be changed at least every 30k miles.

Tranny Fluid

Hi All,

I'm going to futher the question at hand and ask what a good synthetic tranny fluid is to use. Also even if the scheduled maint. does not call for a filter change, should there be one at some point? (this is for the gas motor)
Thank you,

Ron

If you're flushing it regularly and driving it normal, I can't see any reason to "need" a filter change. Shouldn't be enough stuff getting into trans fluid to "fill up" the filter. That being said, it is not that hard to drop the pan and change the filter every now and then. Good excuse to take a look inside the pan and inspect/wipe off the magnet. Also rather easy to add an in-line "fine particle" filter as used on the diesels, just for peace of mind.
200K trouble free miles on my 4R100 and counting.

Not to hijack, but this thread has me interested. Anyone know how much fluid is needed just for a drain and refill on a 4R100?

Don't do that!!
Type F is the wrong fluid for this transmission and would probably cost you a whole lot more than just the price of the fluid!

Mercon V is what you need, that is the replacement for Mercon. On my 2000 I have a drain plug on the torque converter as well as the pan. I drain both, drop the pan and change the filter, takes exactly 15 qt to refill. I gave $64/case for Motocraft Mercon V at Oreilly's.

Don't damage the gasket it can be reused, my pan has been off 4 times and I reused the gasket every time.

I tried to drain TC but PO torqued the shield bolts out of proportion. I got 18" brake bar and good socket, yet 2 of the bolts are stripping the heads. Any tips how to deal with them?

I prefer Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. There is no scheduled mileage to change the filter. If it needs to be changed the trans is already trashed.

If you are just draining the pan it's around 8 quarts.

That includes the torque converter and all the lines. You won't get that much fluid out of the trans by draining.

Who designed the 4R100 Transmission?

I bought my 01 Ford Super Duty and have gone through 3 transmissions. I completed all the required maintenance and still no luck. The Ford engineers must of been on dope when they designed these especially for the 7.3. No more Fords for me.

only the 5 speed torqshift has a external spin filter, not the 4r100's.
