Off my medication, turbo charge a 3V 5.4?

Just got my truck back from the body shop a month after a Pontiac decided to commit suicide on my receiver hitch. Anyhow, man I am loving my truck! Didn't know how much I missed it until I had it back. Unfortunatly while it was in the shop we drove my wifes car. The only downside to that is now I'm conditioned to expect Hemi-Charger response to my right foot!

On to the point! I see there are plenty of supercharger options for the half ton trucks, don't see any for the Super Dutys. Are there some that I haven't found? How about turbos? I'm a diesel guy for a profession and know how much they help wo the sometimes downside of a supercharger. Has anyone ever turbo'd a 3V 5.4?

Thanks!

I've tossed around this idea myself. It's definitely possible. Just has to be all custom. Only "kit" I can find is the STS kit for the 150. I'm sure it can be modified to fit if you have the skill and time. Or they have universal kits. I've decided to go Cummins instead. Close to the same amount of work and cost, and a huge gain in longevity over the gasser.

Hey, if you've done the homework on this (turbo vs. cummins) I'd love to hear more. To keep this from being a diesel/gas thread, why don't you shoot me some detail. My email is my user name at yahoo.com If you have some time for sort of thing anyhow.

I figured doing a turbo conversion would be quicker and less costly than a swap, but didn't do the numbers.

Others on the turbo idea? Would be easy enough to cool, just get a CAC off a powerstroke.

Thanks.

As someone once said, "Very interesting indeed!" I have done a little research into this myself and wondered why there isn't any more performance mod's out there for the 5.4 motor. Ford has sold a bilzion of these motors. I know about the modular theme but would think that being modular would be a plus rather than a hindrince. On top of that, almost every performance part out there for the 5.4 is for a F150, not our beloved Super Duty. I would think that a reasonably priced turbo or supercharger kit to fit the 5.4 SuperDuty's would be a good seller. Thoughts?

Changing the gearing will help in the low end but then you are screaming down the highway at 65-70. There just isn't anything out there that would give all around performance increase across the board.....other than going diesel and all the good and bad it offer's. The deciding factor now for me is, my truck is paid off. I can't afford another truck (even if used)and purchase the go fast goodies.

Forced induction would be one way to boost power across the RPM range. It is a subject of debate and preference whether you go with a turbo or a positive displacement supercharger, each has advantages and disadvantages.

There is an overabundance of Mustang and F-150 speed parts, so adapting to the F-250 would not be a huge issue. I am sure Mike at 5 Star could easily work up a tune for it.

I agree 100% about the forced induction helping across the board. Give me a complete supercharger kit an I'll find the money!!

This is a thread on a remote turbo setup on a 6.8l 3V which is basically a 5.4l 3V with 2 extra cylinders and no VVT.
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...valve-v10.html

Turbo Excursion with the 2V V10. Nice under hood turbo setup.
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...excursion.html

Steeper gears will give you a performance increase across the board also it just will not be up to the gains of forced induction. The gears obviously don't add power. The 3.73 gears that come in in a lot of the gasser SDs suck for performance and do next to nothing for mpg plain and simple.

I never came across a bolt on turbo or supercharger "kit" for any of the 3V SDs. Since you have the 5.4l you could use several parts from an F-150 5.4l 3V kit.

Thanks for the "research material" links guys. Yeah, figured it had to be possible to mod some 150 parts and get a tune. Of course, that tune had better be a good one!

Truck has 4.10's already, though it's wearing 315's (35"), going with 285's next fall.
