Towing 79 F150

I'm looking at possibly purchasing a 79 F150 2wd truck with no trans or motor. I went to uhaul and there web site says my 76 F250 4x4 is not heavy enough to tow this. Does anybody know of a place to rent a trailer near Cleveland Ohio. I appreciate any help that is possible
Thanks
David

Towing 79 F150

My '77 F-250 2-wheel drive did just fine pulling a '79 F-150 without engine or tranny on a tow dolly and also a '78 F-250 with a 400/C-6 the same way. Couldn't get the U-bolts off the rear yoke to disconnect the driveshaft on the '78 so I just pulled the axles and made some heavy cardboard covers to cover the hubs. Also the weather was really icy/slippery when I brought the '78 home. No problems.
Hope this helps.

How wide where the front wheels. The towing dolly from uhaul says it will only fit 79 inch wide tires. Will this work
Thanks

I think the width of the outside of the tires is around 77". I used a tow dolly to haul my 78 to the trails and had to take my front 33x12.50s off and put on the stock tires. It fit just fine.

As for a f250 being too small to pull it, I think that's BS. I used my Do**e 1500 half-ton to pull my 78 4x4 w/460 &c6 200 miles to the trails and back again. And I'm sure the F250 can handle more than that thing.

Good luck.

Dont listen to Uhaul or there site.
I just pulled a 1972 4x4 with a plow on a uhaul trailer(just fits by about 2 inches) with my do*ge 1500 4x4. Make sure the carrier or auto transport as they call them has good trailer tires, we used one a few months ago and it had car tires on it ! SCARRY ride home.
Uhaul told me the 72 wouldnt fit , so i told them i was towing a 72 mustang
Went off with no problems.
Good Luck

don't worry about weight see how much she can pull! My dad brought home a 15000lb bulldozer home from columbus ohio on a triaxle trailer with a gvwr of 9000lb behind my grandpa's 86 F350 Crew cab dually, with a 6.9. Then when he got it home, he wanted to see how much the bulldozer weighed so instead of borrowing my granpa's truck he just hooked on to the trailer with his 77' F150 4x4 with a 351M and a 4 speed. he pulled it to the truck stop that is about 15 miles away and back and had no problems. Be a true ford die heart fan and challenge it!

I'll just tell uhaul its a Little ranger. I just towed a little chevette on a tandam axle trailer with know problems. And my dad used to pull a 31 Foot Chris Craft with out any problems. It just seemed weird that they would say an F250 is to light to haul a F150. Thanks for all the help.

The big question I don't see asked is: How far are you going?

Just follow the rule: Use your head, go slow and easy... Thimk! Hehe

A good part of the weight is gone but 200 miles is a fair haul. Make sure your trailer tires are inflated and properly rated. Watch your tongue load. Good weather, daylight hours only, and stay out of heavy traffic. Take the back roads, slowly.

Check with horsepuller down in the Towing forum.

F-250 to small? That is B/S. I pull a much heavier trailer with my 77 F-250.

Yeah, I think u-haul is VERY conservative in it's estimates on pulling capacities. I used my Ram 1500 to pull my 78 F150 on a tri-axle gooseneck flatbed. The trip was about 150 miles each way. The loaded trailer was well over 10,000 lbs. I also pull a 2-horse gooseneck trailer all over the state. That think goes 7,000 lbs loaded.

U-haul thinks you need an F350 PSD to pull a chevette.
