Powertrains and gas mileage in our trucks
#16
I have a built 460 in a 79 F150, it regularly got 12 MPG when I last had it on the road. That's been a few years ago, so with the changes in gasoline I have no idea what it would do now.

5mpg out of a 460? Damn, I was hoping someone would get at least 10 out of theirs, lol.
I'm going to have to figure something out to be able to actually use my truck as a daily driver.
Keep em coming, I check the other two topics last night and after the second page they pretty much stopped with any such input and became debates :\

20 gal tank might get me 1/3 of the way to Dallas. If I was going to drive it that far!

with the changes in fuel even as of just recently , i.e. they are running 15% alky in it here now if not more , my beater 95 4.6 bird used to get on average ( and when i drove like the grandpa i izz !!!! ) 22 mpg in town , and 34 mpg on the road . as of the last few months it has dropped considerably , even with me running some " additives too help the alky burn better " , she only gets about 18 in town and 29 on the road . she's lost power and subsequently gotten slower in the 1/4 mile , and street light gran prix's , and is generally a very unhappy bird !!!!!!!!!! casey's here has uncut 93 octane premium , i'm gonna have to start getting it and running it . a little more expensive but worth it in the end .

To add to the 460 crowd- My '76 F100 2wd shortwide, all stock '71 460 (high miles), Holley 650, C6, 3:00 gear 265/70/15 tires gets 11 mpg, loaded or unloaded in town and on the highway. Might do better on the highway, but I do run it a little harder than you should efficiently run a 3 speed auto.
'78 F150 S-Cab 2wd shortbox 460 (466 ft lbs of tq), Edelbrock 750, C6, 3.25 gear, 31-10.15-15s and gets between 8-9 mpg on a good week.
Back in the 80s when dad had a '77 S-Cab SWB with 460 and C6 only later to find out it was actually a 429 with CJ heads on it. He use to post 14-16 mpg all day long with that thing. He later replaced that tired 429 with a reman'd 460 and was lucky to get between 6-8 mpg. Distraught about it, he sold the truck.

Years ago, back in my high school days when I built my first '50 F1, I had a 289/C4/3.25 geared 9" and L60x15 tires. With it's limited weight on the back, she'd smoke 'em pretty good, too. Ran a Carter 625 AFB on an Offenhauser intake and stock exhaust manifolds with glass packs. It was a lot of fun and got 15 mpg.
You wanna talk 460's, I have one in my '85 F250 with a C6 and a 3.54 geared Dana 60 turning the stock sized 235/85x16's. 9-10 mpg is pretty typical, loaded or empty. Best ever was 11, but that was years ago and I've had it since 1990. I love the truck, but with gas at $4 a gallon, I can't fill up without running the card through the reader twice.

I have a 390 FE/C6 in my 1955 F100 with 3.25 rear gears. I made two trips to Pigeon Forge, TN last year (F100 Supernationals; GSM F100 Run) and averaged 15.4 mpgs over the two trips. I have found that my truck is very sensative to speed. If I get over 70 mph my mpgs starts dropping fast. If I stay around 65 it does really good.
I didn't build the truck for mpgs, but have been pleasantly suprised by the actual overall performance. I have Edelbrock heads, intake, and carb with a comp cam. Very happy with my truck and average about 3500 miles per year on it.
If I was going to build a F100 for mileage I would use a 302 roller motor, edelbrock carb, 3.50 gears with an AOD transmisson (Ford in a ford ). Several guys at the F100 Supernationals with this combination were avearging in the low 20's. Nevertheless, a small block will never sound like a big block!
