i think the original wiring would have been:
key switch to ALT light to "I" terminal on voltage regulator

I've been outta town ''fishin'' the last couple day's so could not respond!
Anyway? I don't really know anymore about the wiring to help out? wish I did?, but sounds like you've got it under control, I agree with the needle in the haystack thing..lol
I'm sure there are others on here that can answer any questions you may come up with!
Gotta love these ole Trucks!!

Well, its a love/hate thing for me. I finally got it dialed in thanks to the help of knowlegable folks around here. Im very grateful to have found this forum.
