PLease HELP - F-150 won't go above 30 mph

1997 F150 4.6 4x4
Hi I seen your post and had a couple questions my truck is a 1997 4.6 4x4 when I get up to 35-40 mph it kinda starts to hop lightly and the rpms raise but my speed won't... It seems to shift in all gears really fast?? The 4x4 light won't come on unless I switch it on and off a few times but it doesn't kick on underneath if I'm describing it right. I'm trying to figure out the problem. I just bought it a few months ago and haven't gotten far

If as you were driving your rpm's just kept rising but you were not going any faster, it sounds like a snap ring for your drive or over-drive gear. This would not allow for your transmission to shift into the next gear properly. Which in turn would not let you exceed the speed set for the transmission to shift. This is about a 1300-1600$ fix. Don't waste you time or money on a flush, but you could save a couple bucks and buy the gasket, fluid, and filter on your own instead of the shop charging you 21% over the sale price of these parts.
I removed transmission pan and removed valve body and I found that snap ring on reverse was broken..and few pieces were in the grooves of valve body ( I dont remember where exactly they were) ..overdrive servo (snap ring) was not broken...
Do you think this broken reverse snap ring(servo) is the reason why ...it wont go pass 40 mph unless OD is disabled?
I replaced 1-2 and 2-3 accumulator and piston and that broken reverse snap ring but have not touched overdrive section.
Do you think I should remove overdrive snap ring and check if spring inside is ok?

Hello - My truck will not go above 30 mph - rpm's will rev high but, speed will not climb. I was able to put the truck in 2nd gear and drive home at @ 40 mph. Truck has 135K miles on it, I'm the original owner. If anyone has any ideas as to what this might be I would greatly appreciate any info before going the mechanic.

The first thing to do in that situation is to check the trans fluid which may be very low. You could have developed a leak in the trans cooling lines. If the fluid is not low, you probably should have it towed in. If the fluid is low, add trans fluid and have the fluid changed when you can, assuming it hasn't been done in 50,000 miles.

Hi, I just wanted to know did you figure out your problem, I myself are having these issues, my truck doesn't accelerate past 30 unless I turn OD/off, which gives me 40mph, and check engine light hasn't came on. I have been told to change out the transmission solenoids, I'm just not convinced that's the problem. So what did you end up doing?

I missed this one in December. You might want to start a new thread for this issue just for visibility. Tagging onto the end of a seven year old thread probably won't cause any fresh eyes to look at it. The thread starter, Deborrah, hasn't posted anything else in almost eight years so it has likely fallen off their radar.
