Looking into buying a truck
Hi All,
Just joined your forum. So much information at your fingertips! Its a wonderful thing!
Anyways I've been doing alot of research and it sounds like these older IDI's are relatively easy to work on.
A few months ago I found an 86 F-250 6.9 N/A 4spd 4x4 extended cab for sale. The guy is kinda steep on the price I think (3500) Apparently (I haven't looked real close) the motor has been rebuilt. Did hear it run, it sounded strong. Box is in great shape (off another truck), cab and front clip are in good shape, looks like it had a right front fender put on. Everything is different colors like its been pieced together. Some pieces are primer and might be original, IDK. Said it needs a power steering pump, I haven't test driven the truck yet (hoping to next week) Like I said I heard it a couple of months ago, and its still there so I don't think its going anywhere. If I remember right he said there were some extra parts that went with the truck. But as to what parts IDK about that either.
My question is what is the most one should pay for a truck like this? Like I said its all mis matched/primered, and that's not really a deterrent per say, cause this is what I have been wanting. All the body parts are in good shape. It looks like a project someone started but didn't finish. Definatly will need TLC. I had a max price in mind but I'd like to hear what some other people with knowledge of these old trucks thinks. Also things to pay special attention to when looking at it. Thanks everyone!

I'm in Northern Illinois. The land of heavy road salt in the winter. Makes finding anything decent very hard that isnt over priced or a piece of swiss cheese. There is one spot on the side looks like it will need some attention. But other than that its very solid. I was thinking at the most 2500 as it sits. But sounds like that might even be pushing it considering its just primered and will need paint.

I just don't see $3500 in that truck. It doesn't have overdrive, a turbo or anything else special. If it had a decent turbo installed and a Gear Vendors over/under system, I could see it close to $3000 but it still needs paint. 4x4 is about the best option I see on it but that is probably pretty common up there. Chances are he will laugh at you if you offer a reasonable $2500 since he thinks it is worth so much more.

Yeah I definatly don't see that much in it either. I'm hoping to use the fact that its been sitting there for a while against him maybe...IDK. I might not even make an offer or pursue it anymore. I guess it all depends how desperate he is to get rid of it.
Definatly would like to get an IDI tho, sounds like parts for the PSD's are alot more expensive.

if you have 3500 to spend.then do yourself a favor and buy more truck.example:
1992 ford f250 diesel 4x4
(may or may not be worth it either.not enough info or pics.just an example.)
shoot,look at this 1k less.
http://mattoon.craigslist.org/cto/2745169597.html
i could probably go on and on listing more truck for this $ in Illinois.
so you need to ask him why his patched up '86 is worth more than some slightly rusty and newer trucks with turbo's and,or overdrive transmissions.if you don't like his reasons then simply keep looking.

Yeah still getting ducks in a row money wise. Not looking for this truck to be a DD, I just want a diesel to monkey with cause I think they are awesome! And I would like to learn more in the process. I have learned much about them just reading forums and watching videos for the last couple of days.
Thanks for all the suggestions!
