Update:

My friend got a set of glass packs for his Chebby, and doesn't need the old muffler so he's giving it to me. It's a similar muffler but in better shape

I'm assuming similar to the FM40, although all I know or sure is that it's 1-in 2-out and not rusty, so I'll take it.

No way.. the guy is my pal. last year he offered me the truck (300K miles with a reman longblock in the bed under a camper shell) but it'd be subject to emissions testing and I sure as heck ain't gonna go through that hell.

Friend dropped his old muffler and pipe off a little while ago. No brand name on the body. 2 1/2" in, I think 2" out.

The bigger pieces of pipe were what I cut off my truck and had left over.

Got the cats in from a local FTE member. $30 for the two of them. Chiseled out the catalyst and slid a piece of pipe through. Just remembered that Grandma promised a check for good grades Maybe I'll get to do this sooner than later.

I just got my 79 back to the crappy setup for stock 79 400 California specs. Single cat and single exhaust. Before, I had a full dual system with Summit Racing cats and mufflers. The new setup seems to have higher low end torque, but seems doggy at higher RPM's. That could be due to the 6 deg timing required by CA. As soon as it passes the STRINGENT Calif. smog, I'll advance the timing. That will probably help the power. Bottom line....true dual exhaust on a 400 seems to reduce low end torque. I use mine mostly for snow plowing, so the low end is important to me. Probably due to a scavenging issue. Original 2V carb setup.

Interesting. What pipe size and exit location for the duals?

Welded the cats and sprayed some high heat primer.

Digging this thread back up 'cause I'm thinking of going all out on the exhaust.

"Tri-y" 4-2-1 headers, dual H-pipe with chambered mufflers, custom from the header flanges to exhaust tips. I'm thinking 3/8" flanges, 1-5/8" primary tubes to 2-1/2" pipes, exiting behind the rear wheels.
