I see you don't have any replies, so I'll see if I an get things started.
Yes your 1988 Ranger has an OBD-1 ECM computer. So you should have a dash mounted Check Engine Light (CEL) that if not burned out, should light up at KOEO for a self test, before you crank the engine. If the CEL isn't burned out, you can use a jumper wire in the under hood DLC to have the CEL blink any stored trouble codes.
A forum search will turn up links on how to extract any stored trouble codes, which can offer up good trouble shooting clues.
