If you are just looking for a nice, reliable daily driver, you can certainly put on a set of GT40 heads and the cam to go with it while using the SD system. If you want more than that out of a cam, you will need to go with the MASS Air system. That is the biggest cam I have heard of working in an SD system.

If you want to understand what goes into a conversion, you can take a look at my truck and that way you can get an idea of how complicated it is. Looking aback on the process with the knowledge and understanding I have now, I'd say it isn't hard but you need to pay attention to detail. PM me if you want to stop by the house and look at the truck.

Conanski has more info on the afternarket cams. If you do a search you should find threads with the part numbers easily.

The Mass-Flo EFI system runs about $3k. It was originally designed as a carb to MF EFI conversion using mostly OEM parts from several manufacturers. The ECU is left user adjustable though it's "tune" is such that the late model "EFI components" that were not utilized on early vehicles are bypassed. The ECU only controls or seeks data from only the most vital of systems to control the engine. So, it's kind of like a stripped down OEM MF system based on a 4150 based carb style manifold.

Sounds like the QH system allows the end user full adjustability to make the "strip down" mods to the ECU that a tuner may be interested in doing, like the removal on non-vital components or core adjustments for increased displacement, alternate fuels, or forced induction.

Furthermore, it seems like the QH system will allow the end user the same or comparable adjustments that the Mass-Flo EFI system would allow.

As Conanski stated, junkyard parts should run less than $500 if you pull them yourself. An eBay search for the same parts runs about $1000. A Georgia based company sells a complete upgrade kit with all new or refurbished OEM parts for the same upgrade for about $1500. Add the QH kit and the total cost is roughly half of the Mass-Flo EFI kit. If you were converting from a carb, the total cost, manifolds, injectors, etc: included, the cost would be comparable.

I'm a tinkerer by nature. I'm just looking to not be confined to certain parameters based on what the stock OEM ECU defines. For my '92, I'm thinking the OEM upgrade with the QH kit. I feel like that would offer me the tuning capabilities that I seek. Junkyard pickin's are ridiculously slim in this area as junked cars are scrapped quickly. I'll likely need to purchased a pre-packed kit.

The Georgia company sounds like the one I used. If you want to see what the install is like, I have their install instructions for the kit I got, if you want a copy PM me. Like I said before, it's not hard (remove some pins from the PCM, move other pins, splice a few connections, etc) but you just need to be detailed.

If you want more than just a mild cam or want to be able to tune the system, you need to go MASS Air.

One thing I forgot to add about the kit from Georgia...if you have an auto tranny you will also get a Baumann transmission controller (they have a web site). This will allow you to have a lot of control of your transmission (program specific shift points, change line pressure, even have two different shifting profiles).
