75' Ranger Build

So, I recently bought the truck that has been sitting outside in a farmers field for the last 5 years. The motor was in the process of being rebuilt when my friends father died. So, when I tore into it, I found it had all new parts in it. The Cam is a stock "429 Thunderjet" with ID C8SZ-6250-A (new). The cylinders have to be honed or bored due to moisture getting into the block, and two pistons have to be beaded also (all are new though). The heads were the D2VE A2A's. Even though they were rebuilt, I heard here that they have a detonation problem, so I bought some D3VE A2A's. I want to put the Comp Cam 4x4 Extreme with the 1400-5400 rpm range in. I have roller rockers for it already and the hydraulic lifters and pushrods I removed from the motor should work but just to make sure I will measure the rods. I am by no means experienced in building motors, so I would like to hear what you think. I'm not above using the existing Cam just let me know what you think.

If there was enough moisture in the motor to warrant the re-honing of the cylinders and beading of the pistons then you will want to look at the cam shaft and crank for possible rust or corrosion.

I would also check the oil pump and timing chain just to be sure.

The timing chain and oil pump look great. The cam and crank look as polished as the day they were cast. I do have the heads and the manifold in the shop. The heads were shaved by the guy I bought them from and he didn't specify how much. I took the manifold to be polished and have it shaved to match the heads if need be. I am not running headers because I heard by way of rumor that the 460 likes a little back pressure, and the stock exhaust manifold works well at doing that. I bought a Edelbrock 1406 to go with the performer manifold I have. So that's the build. If anyone has any better suggestions (cam, headers, etc) let me know. And now.....more pics.

Yes all the trim is in great shape except for the drivers rear wheel flair. it has a big ding in the top of it, but I'm sure i can get it from LMC or a junkyard. And now......here's the latest pics of the floor pans I just patched tonight!!!

Nice progress! A truck in a paint booth is a wonderful thing. It is going to look great when you get it finished.

I've been trying to multi task on it. I almost have all the trim on. The motor is in (429). So while I wait for clips for the trim, I've been tackling the wiring. They need to make wiring diagrams for the average Joe. And in bigger print. I have the solenoid, starter, and ignition module hooked up. I also found the oil sending wire as well as the engine temp wire and distributor wire. Besides that, what would I need hot to start the truck?
