Got some cash down on a New/leftover 2002 4.0 ltr Ranger XLT with the offroad pkg and am wondering what others are gettring Gas Mileage wise? Is it better than sticker at 15/19 or in that ballpark? Also, any other problems? Just looking for advide.
Thx

warrior26, I doubt you're gonna do any better than what the sticker says, and that's assuming the truck is running normally and you keep regular maintenance. Although they run and perform great, 4.0L Ranger 4x4s aren't really designed for high gas mileage. But don't worry, your gonna really enjoy driving it anyway!
If you do a search in the Ranger Forum on gas mileage you will get a lot of hits, since this is a subject people have lamented on before. In the meantime, take a look at this thread
P.S. Welcome to FTE!

I have a 2002 4.0 4x4 xlt.
Im pretty sure my sticker was 15/18
now that i have 10k miles on it. It seems to have "loosened" up and im getting between 15(all city) and 18-20 highway mix.
My first 6 monthes i babied it and i still only got 15-16mpg max.
just tonight i went 120miles then put 6.43 gal. in the tank
thats 18.66mpg. And i was on alot of back roads with a lead foot.

Here's some of my past experiences over the last 152,500 miles in my 94 XLT 4x4 SuperCab, 4.0L, 5spd, 3.73 axles:
23.9mpg@45mph, country roads, no load (best ever)
12.3mpg@75mph, side by side refrigerator in bed, packed cab, + a 6x12 enclosed u-haul, totally stuffed, no headwind (worst ever)
18.5-19.5mpg@70-75mph, bucking the wind now and then, no load
15.4mpg@80-85mph, stiff headwinds + mtn passes (interstate hwy) + mucho rolling hills (recent road trip, 700 miles total)
15-16mpg city driving, towards 15 in winter
20.4mpg combined city/hwy, my last tankfull
Those 3.73's come with a mileage penalty along with the type of tires I got, but that was expected. On the other hand, when ya stop and consider the fact that if gas had kept up with inflation since 1981 we would all be paying $3 a gal today, so really gas is pretty darn cheap. Enjoy it while we can.

I was reading up on the 2004 Ranger and in the article it said that, overall, the Ranger is "the segment leader in fuel economy and emissions for the standard pick-up truck according to the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency...."
Now, I'm not exactly sure what being the "segment leader" means, especially looking at it strictly in terms of miles per gallon. But it does sound encouraging, even for those of us with automatic trannies.
I also think CowboyBilly's point about certain rearends coming with mileage penalties is a good one.
