Looking to Buy a 2000 F250 V10

Hello all-

Just joined this forum to inquire about a 2000 F250 V10 I'm looking at. I have a few questions. I've heard gas mileage with these trucks is awful. How awful is it? Should I look for anything specific when seeing the truck for the first time? Are they reliable? The truck has 157000 miles on it and looks to be in good condition per the pictures.

Thanks in advance.

It really depends on your commute but expecting anymore than 13mpg is unrealistic. The gas motor trucks are very reliable but this comes at the expense of mpg compared to the diesel versions. If you end up buying it I would change the lugs right away and torque them to 22-25 ftlb’s the factory spec was low and they increased it.

Op, what kind of realistic mpg would be acceptable to you?
Then you can make a realistic decision.

I have an '01 and have had an '02 in the past. 13 is about right on the HWY. I "commute" 7 miles to work down a 50mph rural road, so gas mileage isn't a big concern for me and I love the old V10 super dutys, so for me it was a no brainer. Your situation might be considerably different. When I had my '02 I had to drive about 45 minutes to work. The V10 just wasn't realistic, so I picked up a beater to run back and forth to work in and just used the V10 on weekends and I'd bring it to work every couple of weeks just because I loved it. That may be an option too.

He means change exhaust studs...Check for broken exhaust studs and exhaust leaks. This is a very common problem, and not easy or cheap to fix. Check the antifreeze for oil. A dirty coolant bottle (maybe even greasy) is normal, but oil in the coolant is not. Also a potentially expensive problem, exhaust gasses in the coolant.

If you have to mingle “gas mileage” and “Super Duty V-10” in the same thought process then the truck probably isn’t for you.

I think he actually means the spark plugs. 22-25 ft/lbs is the current general consensus torque for the spark plugs.

OP, best tank ever with my truck was 14.7MPG. Generally, though, I'm looking at about 11MPG

Sam Moore,
Are you joining the V10 society?
I have a similar truck with a zf5, wasn't sure if I was still capable of shifting at my advanced age, but, like falling off a bicycle you never forget.
I love it.. keep us posted.

Super reliable engine if you take care of it. Many folks with the 2V top 300k miles with minimal work ever needing done to the engine aside from general maintenance.

As mentioned, you'll want to immediately pull the spark plugs and re-torque them. Lots of folks blow plugs out due to improper installation on those years.

MPG will be between 9 and 13 most of the time. Not as good as the diesels, but significantly less money to maintain long-term.

over 4 years I avg 10.5 mpg more surface roads - stop and go, less highway driving.

Those V10's are great motors.

I had a 99 F250 and an 06 F350 I bought new. Changed oil and filter on each truck every 5K miles and both were very dependable. Use Synthetic oil.
