I bought a new escalate cluster for my Z71 when i had it from Chevrolet. $499 new.
They would not let me leave without putting the actual mileage of my old cluster..

Here is a link to a company that will repair clusters. http://www.ddinstruments.com/index.p...d=12&Itemid=61

It IS possible to put new mileage on the odometer. The dealer can flash it. The F150 guys do it when they upgrade their clusters for various reasons. The popular reason is because the XL doesnt have a tach. So yes, it can be done.

Please let us know the name of the dealer that is doing this as I am sure Ford would like to talk with them.

Ford only allows cluster programming through certified repair facilities that are closely regulated. When I order a replacement cluster from them, I need to provide VIN, engineering number, mileage, my full name, dealers name and P and A code, dealers address, and then electronically "sign" the order stating that the information is accurate and that I am personally authorized to make the order with them. If there is an error in the order or anything looks questionable, the dealership gets a phone call inquiring about it. They then ship me a cluster programmed as requested and I have a certain period of time to return the old one, or a letter is sent to the dealership and Ford is notified. If the situation isn't resolved, then the title is branded with the state and every time the title is transferred there will be a large warning printed on it stating the mileage is inaccurate.

As for "failed" cluster where the odometer doesn't display, the mileage can be pulled from the PCM on most newer vehicles, or the cluster can be sent to the repair facility where they will access the memory and retrieve it directly. In 19 years I have never had to do this, but others that I work with have done it.

As for upgrades, which are generally much more difficult to do these days because of the interdependency of modules, we can call the repair facility and they will tell us what they can and can't do. When feasible, they will program an updated cluster and send it to us, but we always must return the original.

Actually I am proud of the fact that my 6.0 motor has this many miles on it. with only having the FICM resoldered @ 165,000 and new injectors 2 196,000, and still runs liked a raped ape, The speedometer has been jumping around recently and had the opportunity to pick up one from a wreck.
The three 7.3s Ive owned always gave me great service and long mileage, 6.0's are gettin a bad rap, but if treated right with the right components they art a good motor, I love to beat the **** out of it.

It can, depending on the service center, and whether or not the Dealership is willing to help out. The service center we use will not work directly with the public.

The F150 XL definitely DOES have a tach. Mine has one and every one I've seen has had one... maybe there is a variation that doesn't, but I haven't seen it -- or maybe they don't just in the last two model years???

This is a 9-year old thread, we try not to revive old threads unless it's really necessary.
