Limited Slip

Hi, I have a 96 f150 RC SB 2wd 5 speed with 3.08 gears. I want to get an aftermarket limited slip for the rear. Is it a 31 spline? and will a yukon dura grip YDGF8.8-31-1 work good? Also is it hard to install? Thanks

Yes, the 31 spline axle is in the f150 8.8 rear. I'm not familiar with ( yukon dura grip) you should check with them. As for your ? (is it hard to install ) Well that depends on your ability, if you have never done this ( Crush bearing ,setting backlash, gear contact pattern ect, then it is something you should leave to a Pro. If you are going to do it, now is the time to consider a gear change.

Thanks for the info, I like my 3.08 gears for the mileage. I only pull hay wagons and gravity boxes.

What motor? If its a 5.0, you'd really benefit from a gear swap.

I had 3.08 in mine. Its alot better with the 3.55 limited slip.

Oh, I'd just go with Ford traction lock.

Is this the ford traction lock you were talking about? Ford Racing part number M-4204-F318C I assumed these were for mustangs, I didn't know they would work in a truck.

Yes it will work in a truck with a 8.8" rear axle. Swapping one in is not rocket science but it does require some knowledge of how to setup a differential. In your case you could swap the old pinion gear and tone ring onto the new carrier (with new bearings), set the backlash then be good to go.

Since you have the 4.9, those gears are probably fine. What size tires?

The traction lock from a F150, Explorer, Mustang etc are all interchangable. The only thing you need to make sure of is if its 28 or 31 spline.
