Yep, traction is the big factor for this type of thing, not who has the "toughest" or most powerful truck. The 2011 is bigger, heavier, (meaning more traction) and more powerful, so it's going to win hands down. Only way you would have a chance is to hold the brakes until he starts spinning the tires and then hit the gas.

Although I also think this is a silly test to see who's truck is "better", if this test was done, theres nothing saying that things would start breaking on either truck. That being said...
The 2011 wins every time.(stock vs stock that is) More hp/torque, heavier, more traction. I love our 87-96 f150's just as much as anyone, but they are no match for the newer technology, except maybe in regards to doing your own work on them, and style!

Speaking from the standpoint of someone who once owned a 1990 Ford F-150 XLT Lariat with the Pushrod 302 and as someone who currently owns a 2011 F-150 FX4 Supercab with the DOHC 5.0L I'll put my 2cents in.
The 2011 F-150 will win hands down in all out no stratagy tug o war. The older F-150 is considrably lighter than the 2011 and this will act as a major role in who wins and who doesnt. Even if the older F-150 has better tires I think I would still put my money on the 2011. In truth the 2011 F-150's are more comparable to the the F-250's and F-350's of the early 1990s. These newer F-150's are really quite a bit more heavy duty than the older trucks.
The only chance the 1991 F-150 will have will be if the 2011 loses traction early on and the driver of the older F-150 is quick with his gas to brake and brake to gas application.
But yeah, honestly tug o wars prove absolutly nothing about who's truck is ''tougher'' the only thing tug o wars prove is which driver knows more about how to tug and/or which driver gets lucky...And also which truck has better traction...Other than that tug o wars serve no purpose.
I love both trucks though, don't get me wrong...My old 1990 F-150 was awesome! Back in my highschool days I used to race my friends who at the time had an 1985 Bronco 5.8L H.O a 1993 Silverado 5.7L and a 2001 Dodge Ram 5.2L, None of them could beat my 302 fuel injected though. The Carburated Bronco and the Dodge 5.2L would run pretty close but I could still pull a good car length on them in the 1/4 mile. And that old 1990 sure did have some style...What a great looking truck.
With that said though, my 2011 would easily run circles around my 1990 and it would tug it 10 time's over in a tug o war.
