This is how I got my highboy

Fastmover gave me the idea to write about my truck so here goes..
Back in the beginning of 2009 I moved my family from utah back to California in a old, worn-out, abused 84 bronco got me where I needed to go in the worst of times and that's how I became a ford man..because of reliability..sadly I had to sell her. in Mid 2009 my redneck neighbors had a redneck friend in Mariposa that had what I was looking for
this picture was taken right when I got homeI was one happy guy..I love this old darn truck..I tell ya what a year later I got a commuter so I can start modding and a member on here..ya'll might know him.. ED or by 75F350 I sent that guy my np203 reduction unit for a trade the douche went back on his word, I never got the parts.. Im a man of my word people, that's who I am, then I got the cancer, that was the worst month ever. Im a cured man now I finished treatments in the beginning of this year and I look forward to share or help the norther chapter here on fte...

Matter of fact, I believe that there are a few 78/9 D60's up there.

You secure me a 78/9 D60 front, for a decent price, and I will allow you $1000 credit towrds either a ball joint or king pin Dana 60 that will fit your truck.

I have two of each.

Or you just have to lookin your area. Those axles are easy to come by.

5 minutes and I found these:

Dana 60 front and rear, Dana 70 HD rear, Dana 44 front

1989 Ford Dana 60 front, kingpin, 4.10 gears

dana 60 front end ( 1chevrolet 1ford )

Here is a complete truck. You could upgrade your engine to fuel injection.:

Gotta look for them I just bought a good 88 F350 for 800 bucks. This was a complete running truck!

Parts are out there, and you will be much better off installing a better axle up front. You will be wasting money trying to make your TTB axle bullet proof.

Too many weak points in this axle.

How I got My highboy.

When I was a youngster, like maybe 15 or so, my big brother told me of his dream of some day owning an F250 4x4. My big bro was a huge influence on whom I had become in later years of my life, pretty much my idle, especially since my father had fallen in my early teen years... That was back in somewhere like 1973, when my big bro introduced me to the secret of how cool a highboy really was. Pops died somewhere around 1970 as I recall.

Well, my big bro ended up acquiring a 1955 Ford Coupe, since a highboy was a pretty expensive piece of machinery back in those days, and in no time had it all set up like a stink bug with the rear end all up in the air for race, a Hipo rebuilt engine and WIDE tires. He went and saw the movie Easy Rider with one of his buddies and hit the road in his '55 to see the USA. Unfortunately he only made it as far as Weaverville California when a logging truck merged into his lane and this resulted in a head on collision which totaled the old '55. He lived through the ordeal, but it really seemed to change his life quite a bit... I digress...

Anyway, ever since his words of wisdom, as I viewed them, I was down right determined to own one of those F250 4x4s. It became a dream of mine and I was determined to some day own the best truck ever built!

Somewhere around 1985, I sold a 75 Jeep CJ5 that I had, right after I laid eyes on a 1976 F250 4x4 that was sitting in front of someone's house with a 4-sale sign on the windshield. SHE WAS PURDY! I sold the Jeep and bought that truck, without looking back. She had a 1968-430 horse-460 under the hood, 4 sp trannie, 3" lift. I fell in love with that truck... Even after my "X-wife" side swiped another truck, I still cherished that truck, even more than the X-wife, which she seemed to resent... Then, one day after we divorced, somewhere around 1999, some **s H*** stole her from me (I'm talking about the truck), wamped her hard until rolling her in the desert, set her on fire (to conceal finger prints) and got away with murdering my baby. Ouch, that really hurt! ! !

So later, after grieving, I looked and found another to take her place. A 1973 F250 4x4. She had a stock '73 460 under the hood and was adequate. Boy, we had some good times together, but I always missed the 4 speed and hot rod engine of my first love. So I did a trannie swap and installed the 4 speed that I salvaged from my baby. This truck needed lots of work and I was trying hard to build it the way my baby was, but money was tight, and so was time, being a wildland firefighter and all... Besides, she just wasn't the same as my baby... Oh well.

So one day I found a 1974 F250 4x4 sitting in a lot with a 4 sale sign on the windshield. She was housing a 360 and 4 speed trannie. In pretty good shape, for her age. I figured that it would be less expensive to buy this truck and abandon the '73 project. A friend of mine, who was interested in taking on the old '73 project, offered me a deal to install the '68 460 (that I salvaged and rebuilt from my first love) into that '74 highboy in exchange for my old '73. Being that I had confidence that it would someday be completed and she would not fall to waste, I took him up on the offer... And that is how I got my latest highboy... The '74 sitting in my driveway. She don't melt down all four tires when I dump the clutch and snap u-joints and twist driveshafts into little pieces like my first love, as I built this engine a little more conservatively this time, but she still has lots of torque for pulling over houses and trees.

Sorry for the book, but this is my story.

My highboy has been passed around the family. My dad bought it new in 1970, when I was one. I grew up with that truck around, drove it every day to high school, and got in my first wreck in it. My dad got a replacement truck in 1998 (I wont mention which brand, but it rhymes with "ham") and gave the truck to my brother who has a small ranch outside of Billings, MT.

In 2007, I finally got to have it back and after a dramatic trip from Billings, including a major new engine failure in Elko, NV, a tow from Tigerdan to get it home, lots of work and effort by me, other FTE members, and money, it is almost done. I would never trade it for another truck. Too much family history.

Thanks for starting this thread!

Nice high boy stories. When I buy my next Ford, it will be a F250 4x4, but it is a 89, so technically no high boy. Still, it should be as reliable as any previous version. I remember that disastrous new engine failure, how did that turn out? Did the shop owner make good?

Wow those are some cool stories. Mines nothing to special. My trucks been in my family since 76. Pretty much all of my family members have drivin it for a period of time at some point. Heck my mom drove it while she was pregnant with my brother, who then drove it when he grew up as the shoptruck for my dads company. Somewhere around 11-13 years ago the old 360 was far worn out and they decided to install a 1972 lincon motor.. and a year or so after that my brother ripped it out cause it wouldnt stop breaking motor mounts {> it sat like that for 8 years untill one day i asked my dad what happened to the old truck that i remembered from when i was 5? Well, ho told me it was in the back of the yard at work and i said no way! I had no idea it had just been sitting there. Then everything came together in my head, the motor sittin on the palet in the shop, the 4 speed trans up against the wall, and then the question rose... "hey dad do you think we could fix up the truck?" Of course the answer was a yes, we had been working on cars together since i was 6. So i walked to the back of the yard, through the maze of equipment and renters vehicles to the back corner, and there she was. I was thrilled. Later that year, for my 13 bday my dad surprised me and told me the truck was all mine : D i was so excited and now here we are almost 3 years later.

Late 70's early 80's

When i got it..
