I have never changed mine before since it was done at the time of purchase. I bought the truck used with 72k on it. Once I got the cap off I wanted to clean the housing out in case I got little bits of plastic from using the chisel in there. Good thing I did because there was broken bits off of the inside of the cap where it contacts the filter (way down inside the housing, from ahwile ago I think) and an old o ring from an old filter.

I stripped mine as well, both the outer edge and inside part. I'm leaving it that way until my next fuel filter change which is 10,000 miles away and for me thats about a year and a half. I plan on loading up a half inch drive breaker bar with gorilla glue, sticking it in the center, and turning it once it dries. Hopefully it works. And FWIW the cap barely requires any torque at all. I set my wrench to 20 lb fts (lowest it goes) and that was enough to strip it.

now that you fixed it.... next time use a socket, if i remember correctly the in-engine fuel filter uses a 24 mm, and the in-line uses a 36mm, just FYI, i bought a 36mm by it self from advanced for like 9 bucks, you can use it for engine oil cap also.

You can buy the 36mm Lisle socket pretty cheap.

It's nice, because it's very thin, and it's 3/8's drive, so you can use a smaller ratchet. You don't need a big one anyway.
Personally, in my opinion, a 6 point socket is less likely to cause damage than a 12 point socket. So I managed to find a 6 point 24mm for the upper filter as well.
