F350 wont shift out of park

I have a 02 F350 V10 4x4. Tonight I went out to go to a friends house and the truck started fine but when I push in the brake it will not release the lock on the shifter. You can hear a click noise when you push in the brake pedal. Thanks for the help!

Do the brake lights work? If not the solenoid to release the shift won't work.

The work around is to turn the key one detent from off. This is before anything electrical turns on. Now move the shifter to N and start the truck.

Keep in mind that around 1999 or so, Ford went from using the brake lamp circuit to disengage the shift lock to using a double pole brake switch that used the second half of the circuit for signalling, including shift lock release. Because of that, the brake lamp s can work just fine, but a faulty switch can still cause a failure to release the shift lock. As a confirmation that the signalling side of the switch is good or bad, see if tapping the brake pedal disengages the speed control (if it works in the first place).

When you say cruise don't work do you mean it won't disengage or it doesn't work at all? The brake switch shouldn't have any thing to do with cruise working but the brake switch will keep the cruise from disengageing. I'm betting its the switch on the brake.

Check the single fuse that is common to both the cruise control and the shift lock. See owner's manual.

I looked in the owners manual and found nothing about the shift lock or the cruise. Any ideas? Maybe I need to try and find a schematic for the truck.
