What I assume to be the stock one on my 390FE mounts horizontally.

This was shot looking up from the ground, so the perspective is a little goofy. It appears the CJ one would work, but will the filter clear the engine mount and the frame rail? Excuse my oily mess...yet another cleanup project. You can even see my weepy freeze plug behind the engine mount

I don't have the camera so I cant take a pic of mine. It fits right between the mounts and front crossmember on mine with plenty of room. Just imagine it going down instead of out and see if anything is in the way. It will fit inside the frame rail for sure, you just have to check if anything is beneath it.
Again mine is on a 4wd, a highboy at that, so clearances will be different for 2wd or smaller 4wds.

Same way as dad's truck. Honestly, I don't think this style filter mount suffers from the flow restrictions of the older 90* mounts. Those were a bit restrictive due to the 90* angle.....

As for the "hijack", really it's related, since I did bring up the oiling mods from the start.....

I installed the Edelbrock intake gasket with the blocked off exh. cross-over port. Well after about a 1000 mile of running and had to pull the intake and found that the blocked off port area had burned through the gasket exh-port area. I thought shxt so much for the block off gasket. So I wouldn't worry about cold weather. my 2cents

While the angle may affect the flow, the main thing restricting it is it's small 3/8ths diameter. That's why they are drilled out to 7/16ths to match the front galley in the oiling mods.

By the way Orich, those gun trucks are bada$$! Just watched that vid in your sig. I would hate to be on the other end of that mini gun! or any of the others for that matter. Thanks for your service.

I missed this earlier. I *highly* recommend getting rid of that glass fuel filter. Not only are they *typically* restrictive internally, they are prone to leaking. Especially if the glass gets cracked or chipped....
I would advise getting a fuel pump for 70-72 360/390 truck. They have a large cartridge filter on the bottom which can trap a lot of crud without plugging up, as well as acting like a water seperator. The most you have to do to install this type pump, would be *possibly* having to find the right fitting to accept your current hard outlet line.
Replacement filters for this pump are not expensive, and they are typically available at most parts stores, and even walmart.

I agree 100% and its on the "to-do" list. My grandfather was a bit of a nut... I don't know where he was buying gas but he was sure worried about it. There were 4 filters on the truck when I inherited it. I've already removed the generic enclosed inline ones he added right after both fuel tank pickups, and replaced the factory one on the carb. That one is still there because I ran out of fuel line to replace it

Thanks for the heads up on the pump application. I know my Mustang had one like that and it worked pretty well. I just need to get around to getting all this crap done. Looks like I'm going to need to pull the engine to get at the freeze plugs that are now leaking. This project just keeps getting better and better!

Aw no need to pull the motor just to fix a leaking freeze plug. I've have used these for since 1980 then I came across them. I put one in my in laws 1962 Merc. fe 352 and it's still in not leaking. These are great for the ease to installing them. Just clean it block hole good with sand-paper. If it's sealing walls are really rusted and pitted just put some JB-weld all round the surface put in Copper-plug tighten a little let it set over night then tighten up some more and your set for many many yrs to come. I have always kept and extra one in the glove box for 20 yrs until I rebuilt the motor.Now just have it in my tool box.

The FE's freeze plug size is 1.3/4" size you'll need...my 2cents

How strange... Grab the copper hex, turn the brass nut and she expands a bit? I've never quite seen a plug like that, assuming this is the one?

Yup that's it..I put the one in my in-laws 62 Merc in 1983 and it's still not leaked. I had 4 of these in my truck motor for over 15 yrs. I saw these on the parts shop counter display in 1980 and got one to try. Then after fixing my leaking plug. I when back and bought 2 more of them..

The expandable copper are fine, but DO NOT use those expandable rubber type, except in case of an emergency, such as in the middle of nowhere, needing to get back towards civilization.

Yea in some parts of the block they'll say in. I lost 2 of those rubber ones out of the same location by the motor mount it would not expand and catch the inner lip when tighten up. If my RPM got up to 3000 and out it came. This when I came across Dorman copper expand type..
But like you say use just to get you home..orich

Missed this earlier.....
I had a feeling this would likely be the result of using one of those gaskets that didn't have the crossover port open. Hot exhaust would open it on it's own. Of course, felpro does offer a steel core gasket, which *could* be a bit more resistant to getting burned thru.

I'm pretty much just planning to use the standard felpro gasket. Well, part of it anyways.....

rubber plugs suck! i got a nice shower once, the motor mount was the only thing holding it in, when i jacked the motor for access it came out and soaked me. joy!
