Spin-on Oil Filter Adapter for 223?

Anyone know of a source for a spin-on oil filter adapter for a 223 Six?

I understand (may be right...may be wrong) that Ford changed from cartridge to spin-on filters in mid-1959 for the 223. Mine has the canister/cartridge setup. Works fine, but I did manage to dribble a couple quarts of oil out when I goofed getting it set properly on the gasket and "checked for leaks." Yeah, it leaked. Works fine now...$12 later for two more quarts of DuraBlend 20W50!

A friend said he used to be a volunteer fireman in a department that had a truck similar to mine and they converted its Six from cartridge to spin-on with an adapter kit.

Hey finally a thread I can help with!

I got mine from NAPA 2 years ago, but it was pricey, I think it was something like $30-40. I remember it being quite ridiculous. Maybe shop around.

EDIT: Didn't know this before!-- http://www.y-blocksforever.com/forum...49417-3-1.aspx

Any repro parts vendors, like Mac's, Dennis Carpenter, Sac Vintage, etc., sell them. I have one on my 215 and it's great! Worth every dollar.

I never think to go to NAPA as it's about 20 minutes away. Of course, before I thought to ask this question, I bought two extra canister-type cartridge filters, but I may spring for the adapter.

I have a 54 f100 223 i6 with a spin on oil filter on it. When I parked it for the winter I changed the oil. When I tried to get the napa oil filter off it turned slowly and started to twist the body of the filter! So I left it until spring as I am laid up with a reconstructed foot. I'm guessing it must have the adaptor in, is there something special that needs to be done here? My first thought was that the previous person may not have put oil on the seal before putting the new filter on

You've opened a six year old thread but that is alright, still on topic. I would SWAG the filter was tightened way more than necessary. You are probably right in your assumption.
The replacement filter base will most likely come off when you remove the filter and you will probably need to separate those two parts. I have seen this happen on other type Ford engines with the spin on adapter. Get that foot healed.

Thanks for the info! looks like the adaptor kit is for a specific oil filter/size. I didnt see any lip showing....possible seal against the block..

second question, any idea how many HP I'll pick up from a clutch foot mod? :-)

I typically try to search out an answer instead of just throwing a question up. this thread actually provided me a picture of whats between the engine and the filter

That filter adapter should accept the Ford FL-1A or other brands, a very common size. The gasket shown above goes between the block and adapter. Built in filter seals the filter to the adapter. When you separate the two pieces, you'll see.

The foot clutch mod on that engine should yield an additional 622 HP to the rear wheels.

Edit: Note the stamping on the adapter that indicates rotation position.

B7A-6882-A .. Spin-On Oil Filter Adapter (Motorcraft FL-766) / Obsolete

Applications: 215/223/262 I-6's & 239/256/272/292/312 Y blocks.

There are over 2,000 available NOS .. but y'all won't like the price. Last MSRP: $122.22 - Dealer net cost: $55.00 .. I remember when the MSRP was less than 10 bucks!

Use with Motorcraft FL-1A (replaced B7A-6731-A & C1AZ-6731-A & FL-1) & FL-300 Spin-On Oil Filters.

FL-300 is a shorter version of the FL-1A, was used in 1975/78 Mustang II w/302.

Ford 'shoe horned' the 302 into these cars engine compartments. The FL-1A won't fit as it's too long, won't clear the engine cross member.
