2600 miles in 84 hours

Took the Excursion from Wellington, CO to Centralia, WA and back. Got between 11.6 and 12.9 MPG headed west towing an empty 18 ft car trailer. Coming back with my 55 on it I got between 9.75 and 10.2 MPG. The truck performed flawlessly on the road, transmission temp never came above halfway. The only thing I noticed about 3 times was a surging/popping sound under acceleration under the hood on the driver's side. Any ideas?

The stock tranny temp gauge doesn't move unless it's to hot so don't rely on that. Not sure about the surging popping sound. What engine do you have?
