New noise (Loud&Strange)

Just returned from a 4000km trip home and back. When stopping in kamloops yesterday for fuel is when I first heard it.
When driving very slowly and turning it makes a very audible tinny pop noise- similar to when you hear exhaust cooling- the crackle and ping noise but quite a bit louder.
It seems to only do it at very low speeds and when turning, if it does it at highway speeds I cant hear it.
I checked exhaust, not loose or rattles. I popped hood and had the gf slowly drive and sounds like its coming from engine area. Does not make noise when not moving in any gear/P/N/R....

Any thoughts?

subscribing.

I am clueless as to what this could be. Don't think it is the fuel pump do you?

I doubt it.
I just dont know what else besides the exhaust (manifolds, pipes) that could produce such a noise...its really weird. Like a rock hitting the exhaust really hard.
If it is indeed coming from the motor it hasnt caused any ill effects as of yet, its running like a champ. ( I also got 850km on tank before my fuel light came on!)

maybe one of the pipes when you turn it is flexing enough...I suppose if that is the case then some soot will eventually show up.

Sounds like some good fuel mpg anyway.

^ The flexing was another thing I thought of as well. Tomorrow I will have time to get a better look at things.

It's not the ticking sound coming from the drivers side is it? I have it when my oil is fairly fresh........

Perhaps a broken wire harness clip allowing a connector to dangle and hit a moving part (fan, pulley, belt) at low speeds when there isn't enough airflow to blow it back out of the way?

The oil is actually due for a

Calculate any MPG's yet ?

That is a different problem you got there...

Is the exhaust modified and possibly hitting something?

Just a reminder here: *DO NOT EVER* run a diesel engine out of fuel, *ESPECIALLY* a high pressure common rail one. Doing so is likely to leave you stranded for quite a while unless you know how to bleed air out of the fuel system, and getting air into the high pressure fuel pump has a high probability of damaging it.

When I travel on long trips, I carry a minimum of a full 5gal can of extra fuel which allows me to safely extend my intervals between fuel stops by waiting until I'm failrly low on fuel before looking for a fuel station, safe in the knowledge if a fuel station doesn't show up in time I can add that extra fuel and be safe for another 50 miles while looking for a fuel station.

Yeah I just did an hour ago, the app for iphone says 19.5mpg on that tank, 19.4 the one before and 18.4 the previous two tanks. Im more than happy with that. Have a 500lb quad in back plus tons of luggage n crap in the back of cab.

Ive got the spartan dpf/doc delete pipe, that is all. I got under truck tonight after work, checked front driveshaft, axle shafts, steering shaft, tie rods, exhaust..everything I could see and touch. Everything appears/feels solid. I tapped the rotor guards, they are pretty thin and tinny sounding, maybe something was hitting it? I reall dont know. I couldnt duplicate sound tonight.

I never let my vehicles get very low on fuel, Ive had a work truck (diesel) run dry on me once or twice, sucks when its -30 out
(My fuel light never came on btw, but it had to be close)

Oh, on my way down on vacation I was running the 210 tune, and on the way back I was running the 275.....
