Hey guys and gals,

I had to change a u-joint in my truck tonight and noticed I had some play where the driveshaft connects to the rear diff (forgive my terminology, but the yoke i believe?)

Anyways I would like to check out a parts diagram, or whatever they are called, so i can see whats involved in possibly repairing this problem before I throw the rear driveshaft back on, or before I go spend 500 bucks on a new-used differential.

Anyone had a similar problem and repair it? Ive always been hesitant to rip apart the rear end on my truck, and to be honest its going to get replaced in a few years so i dont wanna go and buy a brand new diff as well.

How much play Sheldon? I have a factory manual if you need it. Lots of tools also!! You bring the refreshments and I repair!! Is there any movement up/down sideways or in out? if not it is most likely ok. they do have some backlash in the gears!

Dean I never realized you worked on the diffs, but it does have a little side to side and up and down play, when I turn the yoke clockwise, and take the slack out of it. Im thinking at most 1/8" side to side, up and down, and maybe not even that much in and out.

When I turn the yoke counter clockwise and "tighten" the slack up, there is no play at all.
The rear axle drive pinion seal seems to be sloppy in the housing as well, but there is no signs of leaking at all.

You're welcome, Sheldon. Sounds like you may need new pinion bearings, races, crush sleeve, and seal.

 

sounds like a detailed inspection is required for sure!
