'84 Dip Stick Frustrations
The 300 in my '84 has the dipstick towards the front of the engine (it's between the distributor and the grill). I've never seen one like it before.
Normally, I wouldn't care, but it has a dipstick in it from an '82, and when properly filled, the '82 dipstick doesn't even *touch* the oil. It pretty much makes the dipstick useless since I can't periodically check it.
The problem is, I can't find an '84 version of the dipstick anywhere. Ford doesn't sell them anymore. Parts stores don't have them. And I can't find any 300s in the junk yards that have the same style dipstick hole towards the front.
Here's the other odd thing. Last weekend I went and bought a generic dipstick that has an adjustable length on it. The idea behind it is you fill your engine to where you know it's good (6qts, new filter), then put the dipstick in and set the length. This one was at least 4 inches longer than the current one that was in there. The thing is, I put it ALL the way in and it still didn't touch!!
What's the deal?
Anyone know where to get this style of dipstick or what's special about it? Is it like 3 feet long or something??

Is your setup similar to this?

You might have an engine originally from a van.

Here's the setup. The oilpan doesn't have a provision for a dipstick, and the current one comes out of the block, so it looks as if they're a matched pair.
The person I bought it from purchased it from the original owners. They bought it here locally, so it hasn't gone very far since '84. They have all the original oil changes marked down in the owners manual. As such, I'm pretty sure it's the original engine.
Although, obviously, something happened with the dipstick at some point, or I wouldn't be having this issue. I'm just not sure what.

Dipstick goes into the block in front of the dist, yet it looks as if the sump is well behind the oil filter. I don't see how the stick could reach the sump.......
My pan has the sump in the same basic location, and the dipstick goes thru the side of the pan, behind the filter. In fact, it's slightly loose where it goes thru the pan, so it spends 99.9% of the time with the tube resting on the filter. I always move it away as I change the filter, but it's right back on it within seconds of starting the engine.

Hey, AB--
Somewhere along the way your o.pan got changed. I can't tell from the photo which end of the engine the sump is on, but I believe, since it is 4X that it is in the rear? My second block had a dip stick at the rear, but it ALSO had a hole for it at your location that was plugged.
You either have to change the pan to center sump one, or put the d.stick in the rear where your sump is. I would ck for a rear dipstick option, if that is where your sump is, and see if there is a little oem plug there. Then you have to find oem d.stick and tube from the junkyard for that location.

Yes, I just did a fresh oil change on it. 6 quarts and a new filter.
Previously, I had a shop do it since they were having a special where it actually cost less to have them do it than it would for me to purchase the oil and do it myself. They said they put 6qts in, saw it wasn't up to the dipstick line, and put more in. They said they got to around 9 quarts before they realized something was fishy (and it still wasn't touching the dipstick), and had to drain it and put 6 back in according to the manual.

Thanks Numberdummy, I'll have to see which one I have. If it's the D version, I'll give them a call.
Did the oil pans change shape? Can you tell where the sump is by the shape of the oil pan?
And yeah, I don't see how the pan could be shaped any differently since the 4x4 axle is definitely right up against it.
EDIT: Just pulled the dipstick. Here's the part number: E2TE-6750-JA
Looks like the dipstick is correct.
I'm scratching my head even more, now.
