Strech your short bed?

Would you ever let a company cut and extend your frame to fit a longer bed?
Check this out:

Figures, it's a Dodge thing.

I cannot see how the expense of this would ever be recouped. Maybe if you kept the truck for 50 years as a collector item, but how many people realistically do that?

Basically its only for the Dodge (RAM now) Mega Cab because they only come in short bed. Funny thing is you look in their for sale section and most of them look like mall crawlers and the bed probably doesn't get used anyway.

The mega cabs are really only good for mall crawling. They're not recommended for snow plowing due to frame and cab flex, and they have ridiculously low tow ratings. On my way through Wisconsin this spring, I saw a mega cab dually near Madison pulling a car trailer. The road wasn't exactly smooth, and the trailer was really handing it to that poor truck. The flex between the cab and bed was UNBELIEVABLE, I was surprised the bad wasn't hitting the cab, it was dang close! The driver was all over the cab. I almost felt bad for him. I can only imagine what stretching one of those things would do to an already weak truck.

I had no idea the Mega Cabs had low tow ratings. What are the ratings? Is it just because the cab is so large? I mean, with the short bed that they come with, they should still be slightly shorter or the same length as a crew cab long bed. What would cause the unusual frame flex?

Answer to question #1.
All of these trucks are Ram 3500 4x4s.
The first two columns (Left to Right) are SLT trim trucks with the latter two columns being Larmine Longhorn Editions or "LLE" for short
{RegCab} {MegaCab} {CrewCab}{MegaCab}
{SLT} {SLT} {LLE} {LLE}

<table style="width: 504px; height: 100px;" class="content_body_ram_table" id="compareDataTable" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody id="Capacities/Weights_body"><tr id="tr_Capacities/Weights_6"><td class="content_body_ram_td_border_rb" id="td_2903_0">Payload Capacity - Standard
</td><td id="td_2903_1" class="content_body_ram_td_border_rb">4940 lbs.</td><td id="td_2903_2" class="content_body_ram_td_border_rb">2590 lbs.</td><td id="td_2903_3" class="content_body_ram_td_border_rb">4330 lbs.</td><td id="td_2903_4" class="content_body_ram_td_border_rb">2530 lbs.</td></tr><tr><td colspan="5">
</td></tr><tr id="tr_Capacities/Weights_7"><td class="content_body_ram_td_border_rb" id="td_2867_0">Towing Capacity - Maximum</td><td id="td_2867_1" class="content_body_ram_td_border_rb">22300 lbs.</td><td id="td_2867_2" class="content_body_ram_td_border_rb">18050 lbs.</td><td id="td_2867_3" class="content_body_ram_td_border_rb">19050 lbs.</td><td id="td_2867_4" class="content_body_ram_td_border_rb">17900 lbs.</td></tr><tr><td colspan="5">
</td></tr><tr id="tr_Capacities/Weights_8"><td class="content_body_ram_td_border_rb" id="td_2890_0">Towing Capacity - Standard</td><td id="td_2890_1" class="content_body_ram_td_border_rb">11600 lbs.</td><td id="td_2890_2" class="content_body_ram_td_border_rb">10950 lbs.</td><td id="td_2890_3" class="content_body_ram_td_border_rb">12900 lbs.</td><td id="td_2890_4" class="content_body_ram_td_border_rb">12900 lbs.</td></tr></tbody></table>
In the more basic trims Payload is cutback roughly in half for the MegaCab, the Max Tow capacity is cut by 4000 lbs or so, and standard towing is a more or less negligible 650 lbs.

Moving to the Higher trims and comparing between Crew Cab and Mega the capacity loss is more less the same considering both are 4 full door cab trucks.

Unless someone beats me to it I'll post a comparison between the Ford and Chevy Cab/Capacity loss ratios sometime later.
