Chipping a 93? worth it or not?

Do performance chips make much of a difference in a 93 F150 with a 302 and aod transmission? I was just wondering if its even worth looking at or not since the computer systems in these trucks arent as complex as the newer ones. I was reading somewhere that these truck spark retard after shifting and a chip will take care of that so it doesnt. When the truck shifts its like it sort of falls on its face till it builds up RPMS again and i was wondering if a chip would help with that any or improve performance at all.

Chips are a waste of money. Just advance your timing yourself for free. Alot of info if you use the search feature.

i agree with 86f150302 , the only good chips for your truck should be potato chips !

The only chip that is worth the money is a custom burned chip , the over the counter chips don't do much , you would be better off spending the money on exhaust and a cam , the exhaust is restrictive , long tube headers and free flowing exhaust will let the motor breath , and the cam in the 93 is to small....advance the timing from 10 deg to about 14 deg BTDC , as long as it dosn't ping you will be ok , this will help....Lew

Agree with previous posters. Unless you have a custom programmed chip for your truck, they are pretty much worthless. Also, you don't want to "tune" your truck unless you are doing a lot of engine mods.
Unless you are really determined to make a hot rod out of your truck, you are better off to tune it and maintain it for it's intended use.

Just my opinion, Your truck, your money

I would only recommend a chip, and then a custom one, if you have done major modifications to your engine and you need to retune based on your new mods. A basic timing change can be done as mentioned above without a chip. What modifications have you done, and what are you looking for in a chip?

Our local Mustang(the only person locally that re flashes FORD computers) tuner also told me that re programming near stock engines
is too much money for the gains. Work on exhaust for seat of the pants gains.

Hmm....Confucius (local mustang guy) tells well...spend money elsewhere first, then tune to optimize.

He builds 1/4 mile Stangs and is a great FORD guy. He also builds some
fast Lightnings too.

He tells his customers straight up what works and what doesnʻt.

He replaced our Bronco engine last year, he went over his original estimate,
but ate the cost overruns.

Cool....it's nice to have someone who shoots straight with ya....instead of being focused on making a buck.

There aren't any mods. As far as exhaust goes it has one cat but its gutted then is y'd out the back so there isn't any restrictions. Although it does have a couple bad leaks that I need to drop the exhaust and weld. Will those leaks make it run any different?

So I will stay away from a chip and try advancing the timing a few degrees and see where that gets me.

Depends on where the leaks are. In front of the o2 sensor or around o2 sensor get fixed, behind o2...if you can live with the sound, up to you.

The 2 leeks are a few inches right behind the o2 sensor.

I just advanced mine over the weekend. It runs like a champ. I haven't had a chance to see if the mileage has gotten any better. And don't forget the remove the spout connector before you adjust the timing.

How far did you advance it?
