99 or 00 F350 2wd get HORRIBLE mileage. How we can fix?

Well Uncle bought F350 I found. Only had 96K miles.

F350 ext cab long bed 2wd Automatic with 3.73

He is very disappointing with mileage. He get 14-15 mpg highway at 65-75 mph for 300 miles.

I end drive his F350 for my personal since he hardly drive so I put more miles. Here result I get 11 mpg in city rpm were 2-2400 rpm. I was nearby fall on ground. Then did same thing but keep 2K rpm below it got 13-14 mpg. What heck I cruise 40 mph at 1,300 rpm. My 87 F250 diesel get 21-24 mpg doing that.

I am pretty sure truck is STOCK. We bought from #2 owner he upgrade to F450 dually to tow 5 wheeler camp. He claim it get 16-19 mpg with his harsh drive style.

We saw black smoke on ONLY cold engine so that mean it been chip or have turner on?

There issues with transmission there little sloppy shift when you Stop it like it pop out neutral/randomly when you Stop at red light but when go it loose shift 1 then it fine. It only doing that when you STOP. Tran fluid is red it not burnt. There sticker on pan say Ford transmission

Buy a Ford Focus. No one should buy these trucks and expect over 12.

Well it carry stuff that Focus can't hold. There 6 empty propane tanks in bed for refill in New Boston.

I expect to see 15-18 out that truck. My rule on buy trucks I research what fuel economy and see how to get better before bought.

The biggest contributing factor to MPG's IMO is clean, check for proper operation of EBPS, and tube. Then checking for boost leaks.

My crew cab 4wd DRW only gets 13.5 to 14 mpg. You may be a little low, but not outrageously so.

What EBPS? Exhaust sensor? tube where?

How we check Boost leak. We don't have boost gauge on. But I saw one on driver side those blue hose it pretty oily. Saw passenger exhaust pipe is cover in oil if you look under. Is that fitting leak behind engine between cab?

Here's a link to the cleaning of the EBPS(Exhaust back pressure sensor) Welcome to guzzle's Exhaust Backpressure Sensor Cleaning Maintenance Web Page it could be checked to ensure proper operation AE or compatible scanning equipment.
Boost leaks, try a DIY boos leak detector, https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...+leak+detector, to pressurize the system and use soapy water to spot leaks.

Also check for leaking up pipes(The pipes coming up from the manifolds to the turbo, usually evidenced by soot around the donut flanges.

That definably useful info. I plan doing that tomorrow. I can't image how badly soot inside EBPS. We tried rev 3K rpm once a month to knock soot out.

I have see soot on cab behind turbo on friend's f450. I can't image how fun to fix exhaust leak behind turbo.

What about CPS recalled? I would say there little hard start if it sit more than days. Idle isn't smooth when in gear at stop sign when temp up on gauge it little rough but thought it normal.

Ok here update.

Been drive and coast so much I can. cruise 55 mph with my feet. Cruise control doesn't do ok.

Mpg I get 18.3 that TERRIBLE.

I notice that rear bumper on passenger is cover in black soot. What cause rich running? I plan pull EBPS sensor this morning I hope it clogged.

I went under truck look at transmission's oil pan there red sticker say void warranty something December 2000 it factory ford sticker.

I been watch rpm gauge and speed. I think there something wrong with transmission. It isn't feel stock it like it have turner on but I can't find out. When you drive 40 mph it get while to shift in 4 or it stay 3 gear at 1800 rpm vs 4 gear 1400 rpm.

There randomly shift when you stop it feel shift like you have broke rear axle that is loose but it not loose.

If you're getting 18.3 mpg you can't ask for much more! I'd like to see 18.3 mpg out of my truck! Like I said before, I'm getting 13-14 in my truck.

Hand calculated.

I think there issues with engine cause there black soot on rear bumper. We never ever rev pass 2K rpm.
