What's the deal with my oil pan gasket?

I've got a 92 F150 302, and I have alreay put 2 oil pan gaskets in, and now it needs another. Each time I replace it, it doesn't leak a drop for a year or so, and then all of a sudden, it leaks pretty badly. What's the deal? Is this common? Is it the type of gasket I'm using?

What gasket did you use? OEM or aftermarket? I understand that Ford has released an improved gasket to address this problem.

When replacing the gasket, did you verify that the pan rails are not deformed?

What's the deal with my oil pan gasket?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-Dec-02 AT 01:38 PM (EST)]They were aftermarket gaskets from a privately owned part store. They looked like quality gaskets at least. I haven't noticed any deformation. Do you have any more information on the improved version?

The leaks show up at the half-moons in the front or back.

Post What's the deal with my oil pan gasket?

Hey bulldogcountry1,
I just replaced my Oil pan Gasket also and I used a Felpro brand gasket, I'm also having a small leak on the u-sections, the one in the front seemed to have stopped leaking on it's own but the rear continues to leak. I'm in the process of fixing the problem, my mechanic just hasn't gotten around to checking it out, but he told me that if we do have to bring it down again we will use RTV sealant in those sections so the gasket stays in place in that area.
Let me know if you find another solution!

I know JEGS sells a one piece gaskets for the 302 you might want to try that.

Thanks. I just want to get the best one because I don't want to do it again. Hopefully the third time is a charm. I finally figured out how to change it in a reasonable amount of time, but not until after I was so mad I could kill puppies.
